Pubblicato nel settembre 1850 sulla 'Neue Zeitschrift fur Musik', questo scritto di Richard Wagner non ha perso ad oggi nulla né della sua sconcertante attualità né della sua canea provocatoria. È dinanzi al cosiddetto tribunale della storia che Wagner trascina l'ebraismo, pronunciando una sentenza inappellabile: Untergang, tramonto, fine. L'ebraismo deve tramontare! È questo l'esito necessario di una battaglia condotta in nome della sopravvivenza dell'arte e, in essa, soprattutto della musica. Se 'giudaizzata', la musica non può che decadere: se essa sempre esprime lo spirito profondo di una terra, gli ebrei, che non hanno una patria, non la possono che condurre a morte. Il testo si chiude con una invocazione agli ebrei che sembra attingere da Feuerbach, pensatore sempre presente nella mente di Wagner, nonché dal 'giovane' Marx, ebreo anch'egli, ma 'redento', emancipatosi ad uomo: smettetela di considerarvi ebrei, diventate finalmente uomini, 'redimetevi, rigeneratevi. Allora saremo uniti e indistinguibili!' e la musica e l'arte saranno salve.

Richard Wagner è riconosciuto come uno dei più importanti musicisti di ogni epoca; per molti è il più grande compositore romantico, per Nietzsche il massimo esempio dello spirito dionisiaco nella storia della musica stessa. Non tutti sanno, però, che Wagner fu un convinto antisemita; precursore e propugnatore delle tesi razziste che, proprio negli anni in cui scriveva questo pamphlet, stavano cominciando a depositarsi nella coscienza collettiva del popolo tedesco. Tesi forti, basate sull'ideologia del pangermanismo e della superiorità della razza ariana; tesi che confluiranno nell'antisemitismo nazista. Dopo lo scandalo dei Quaderni neri di Heidegger, questo manifesto dell'antisemitismo wagneriano, poco conosciuto e praticamente introvabile, consente di fare un ulteriore passo avanti nella comprensione delle origini di un male che ha attraversato dall'interno i gangli vitali della cultura europea.

Simbolicamente rilegato in rosso, il colore della rivoluzione, il manoscritto di Oper und Drama fu completato il 10 gennaio del 1851 e spedito all'amico Theodor Uhlig, critico musicale e fervente sostenitore di Wagner, con la dedica: 'Rossa, o amico, è la mia teoria!'. Il volume era nato come un articolo di ampie dimensioni sull'opera moderna, ma crebbe a dismisura tra le mani di Wagner, ed apparve a Lipsia alla fine di quell'anno in tre tomi. Sebbene ne curasse la ristampa altre due volte, nel 1869 e nel 1872, con correzioni e l'eliminazione di vari riferimenti polemici, dopo la prima edizione Wagner sentì il bisogno di prendere le distanze dal suo maggiore trattato teorico, senz'altro anche influenzato dal pensiero di Schopenhauer, che lo portò a rivedere in parte la propria concezione della musica come mezzo dell'espressione al servizio del dramma. Questa nuova edizione italiana ricostruisce filologicamente l'intero tragitto editoriale dell'opera, e la propone per la prima volta al lettore non solo nella sua integralità ma anche nel suo divenire. Il testo principale qui tradotto segue quello dell'ultima edizione (che Wagner giudicò definitiva), riportando in nota le parti inedite del manoscritto fatte conoscere da Klaus Kropfinger nella sua riedizione dell'edizione del 1851, nonché le principali varianti introdotte da Wagner nelle edizioni successive, riscontrate direttamente sugli originali.

Se davvero, come Wagner affermava, separare l'artista dall'uomo è come dividere l'anima dal corpo, le migliaia di pagine di cui si compone il corpus dei suoi scritti letterari, autobiografici, teorici e polemici può costituire una preziosa via d'accesso a entrambe le parti di questa unità indivisibile e sfuggente. La raccolta di scritti che qui si propone documenta nel suo insieme tre epoche decisive nell'evoluzione del pensiero di Wagner: la fase giovanile e rivoluzionaria, intorno al 1850, le riflessioni sulla prassi esecutiva, sulla finalità dell'opera e sulla nozione di Musikdrama scritte fra la fine del 1869 e il 1872, mentre nasceva l''ideale di Bayreuth', infine le tarde considerazioni riassuntive sulla drammaturgia musicale pubblicate mentre ferveva il lavoro alla partitura del 'Parsifal'. Vi si troveranno alcuni dei saggi più famosi, come il fondamentale scritto autobiografico 'Una comunicazione ai miei amici', o il celeberrimo e profetico 'Del dirìgere', o ancora le pagine illuminanti di 'Sulla denominazione' 'Musikdrama' e 'Sull'applicazione della musica al dramma', fondamentali per la comprensione del suo pensiero drammaturgico. Ma se i temi e le finalità degli scritti sono diversi, su tutti aleggia la sovrana vis polemica dell'autore, presente qui come non mai: quel suo 'scrivere parlando' per chiarire, giustificarsi o colpire, che alterna una passione contagiosa ad attacchi velenosi e talvolta meschini.

A più di cent'anni dalla loro prima pubblicazione nei Bayreuther Blätter, questo volume presenta al lettore italiano due testi wagneriani finora inediti, la cui lettura è in grado di rivelare alcuni fondamentali aspetti del pensiero del compositore tedesco che in altri, assai più celebri, scritti non emergono con la stessa forza e incisività. I due saggi posti a loro commento firmati da Giovanni Guanti e Francesco Ragni - assieme a un ricco apparato critico-bibliografico, forniscono al musicologo e allo studioso gli strumenti necessari per districarsi in un fitto labirinto ideologico-concettuale, che ancora non smette di svelare il suo fascino e le sue contraddizioni.
