Questi cinque racconti, ancora inediti in Italia, vennero pubblicati mentre Woolfe era ancora in vita; tutti tranne La lettera spagnola, un resoconto autobiografico sulla Germania nazista, apparso per la prima volta negli Stati Uniti nel 1987. Soltanto nel 2000 venne data alle stampe negli Stati Uniti la versione originale e integrale del romanzo, che ricevette unanimi ed entusiastici consensi. Questa prima traduzione italiana, che è anche la prima edizione ad apparire in Europa, ci offre la possibilità di riscoprire non solo un'opera tanto significativa, ma soprattutto un autore di enorme statura, uno dei pilastri del Novecento letterario americano al pari di Dreiser, Steinbeck e Caldwell. 'Dalla morte al mattino' è una raccolta di segmenti narrativi ritagliati da un'unica, enorme opera che Thomas Wolfe non ha mai smesso di rielaborare durante i dodici anni che ha dedicato alla scrittura. Da questo processo di riduzione, operato dall'autore insieme al suo editor del tempo Max Perkins, nasce 'From Death to Morning', uscito nel 1935 e qui proposto per la prima volta in lingua italiana nella forma che lo stesso autore avrebbe voluto vedere pubblicata: una raccolta di miniature, modelli esemplari della poetica wolfiana che si sostanzia nell'ambizione di creare un libro-fiume capace di contenere ogni possibile sfaccettatura della percezione umana. Wilson R. Bachelor was a Tennessee native who moved with his family to Franklin County, Arkansas, in 1870. A country doctor and natural philosopher, Bachelor was impelled to chronicle his life from 1870 to 1902, documenting the family's move to Arkansas, their settling a farm in Franklin County, and Bachelor's medical practice. Bachelor was an avid reader with wide-ranging interests in literature, science, nature, politics, and religion, and he became a self-professed freethinker in the 1870s. He was driven by a concept he called 'fiat flux,' an awareness of the 'rapid flight of time' that motivated him to treat the people around him and the world itself as precious and fleeting.



He wrote occasional pieces for a local newspaper, bringing his unusually enlightened perspectives to the subjects of women's rights, capital punishment, the role of religion in politics, and the domination of the American political system by economic elite in the 1890s. These essays, along with family letters and the original diary entries, are included here for an uncommon glimpse into the life of a country doctor in nineteenth-century Arkansas.
