George Berkeley (1685-1753) was an Irish philosopher, an anglican bishop and one of the three great British empiricists along with John Locke and David Hume. Ignored and derided in life, he is now widely re-evaluated and considered as a sort of indirect precursor of Ernst Mach, Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr for his thesis on the non-existence of matter and the impossibility of an objectively absolute time and space. His critiques of mathematics and science are among the most controversial, brilliant and revolutionary in the history of philosophy. 'De Motu'; sive, de motus principio & natura, et de causa communicationis motuum, o semplicemente 'De Motu', è un saggio scritto da George Berkeley e pubblicato come volantino a Londra nel 1721. Fu poi presentato senza successo per un premio che era stato offerto dalla Royal Academy of Sciences di Parigi. Considerato il precursore di Mach ed Einstein, Berkeley si occupa del principio del movimento, della sua natura e della causa della comunicazione dei moti. Tuttavia, come ben riassunto nella sua celebre formula Esse est percipi, sostiene che la fisica non può fornire spiegazioni causali. Tali cause sono incorporee, divine, e spetta alla 'filosofia prima', o metafisica, occuparsene. Per questo i fisici devono evitare di usare termini astratti che non fanno altro che oscurare la chiarezza dell'esperienza empirica e nulla ci possono dire al di là della percezione.
