Lettore appassionato e vorace, Johannes Brahms cominciò nel 1853 a trascrivere su robusti quaderni foderati di lino i passaggi più interessanti o toccanti dei libri che acquistava o si faceva prestare. Sulla copertina del primo, annotò a grandi lettere "Lo scrigno del giovane Kreisler", titolo che rimanda a Johannes Kreisler, il musicista al limite tra genio e follia scaturito dalla penna di E.T.A. Hoffmann, con il quale Brahms si identificò con entusiasmo al punto da trasformarlo nel proprio alter ego romantico, impulsivo e tormentato. Pubblicati in Germania nel 1909 dal musicologo Carl Krebs, tali quaderni appaiono in un'edizione che integra e rettifica in più punti la versione originale tedesca, arricchita da un'introduzione aggiornata ai più recenti studi musicologici brahmsiani. When Brahms was about twenty years old, he began to copy into the notebook he always carried, long or short passages he had read and wished to keep. This practice belongs to an old tradition followed by Erasmus, Ben Jonson, and John Milton, to mention but three examples. Four of Brahms' notebooks have been preserved. In 1909, twelve years after the composer's death, the German music critic, author, and scholar Carl Krebs collected and published these notebooks in one small, handsome volume. The limited edition was soon exhausted and the collection was never reprinted. Krebs was aided in writing his informative Preface by the author Max Kalbeck, the first volume of whose monumental biography of Brahms had appeared in 1903. Kalbeck calls attention to these notebooks, convinced that they offer the key to Brahms' innermost being. The present volume, translated and introduced by Agnes Eisenberger, provides the original German with its English equivalent on facing pages. The annotations and descriptions of the various authors are by Siegmund Levarie.

Brahms brilliantly captured the spontaneity and passion of Hungarian gypsy music in his 21 Hungarian Dances. In this volume containing the first 10 dances, editors Carol Ann Bell and Digby Bell have scrutinized all available autograph manuscripts of the duet, solo and orchestral versions and compared them with the earliest printed editions to produce the most scholarly, critical body of these works available today.
