Arenas Reinaldo Title : Il palazzo delle bianchissime moffette
Author: Arenas Reinaldo

Arenas Reinaldo Title : Celestino prima dell'alba
Author: Arenas Reinaldo

López María Encarnación, Arenas Reinaldo (CON), Alea Tomas Gutierrez (CON) Title : Homosexuality and Invisibility in Revolutionary Cuba
Author: López María Encarnación, Arenas Reinaldo (CON), Alea Tomas Gutierrez (CON)
Publisher: Tamesis Books Ltd

This work offers an alternative insight into the longstanding and conflicting relationship between politics and the (gay) intelligentsia in Cuba by looking closely at political texts, film, documentaries and literature from prior to Fidel Castro's regime until the present day. The book offers new readings of the work, letters and interviews of two influential voices, Reinaldo Arenas and Tomás Gutiérrez Alea. Arenas's material reveals a new account of the nature of 'the voice of the invisibles' and the key elements of the construction of a Cuban national rhetoric that looks at (governmental) power and (gay) resistance as being in perpetual tension, which often increases the feeling of moral panic and even social exclusion and displacement among citizens. The book also offers a new interpretation of Gutiérrez Alea's renowned film Fresa y Chocolate (1994), resulting from the use of unpublished and revealing testimonies of the Cuban dance critic and writer Roger Salas and the secret messages inferred in his short story 'Helados de pasión: El cordero, la lluvia y el hombre desnudo' (1998). Dr MARIA E. LPEZ is a Senior Lecturer in Cultural Studies and Sociology at London Metropolitan University and an Associate Fellow at the Institute of Latin American Studies at the University of London.

Author: Correa Mujica Miguel, Romay Alexis (TRN), Arenas Reinaldo (INT)
Publisher: Green Integer Books

In his introduction to this novel, noted Cuban novelist Reinaldo Arenas suggests that there are two kinds of good literature—the second of which, exemplified by North of Hell, is an “unstoppable fury of the condemned”—satiric literature at its best.

Arenas Reinaldo, Hurley Andrew (TRN) Title : Hallucinations
Author: Arenas Reinaldo, Hurley Andrew (TRN)
Publisher: Penguin Group USA

In the brilliant tradition of Don Quixote and Candide, Hallucinations is a modern masterpiece of Latin American fiction. Fray Servando-priest, blasphemer, dueler of monsters, irresistible lover, misunderstood prophet, prisoner, and consummate escape artist-wanders among the vice-ridden populations of eighteenth-century Europe and the Americas, fleeing dungeons, a marriage-minded female, a slaveship captain, and the Inquisition. Whether by burro, by boat, or by the back of a whale, Fray Servando's journey is at once funny and romantic, melancholy and profound-a tale rooted in history, yet outrageously hallucinatory.

'An impenitent amalgam of truth and invention, historical fact and outrageous make-believe. . . . A philosophical black comedy.' (The New York Times)

Arenas Reinaldo, Koch Dolores (TRN) Title : Mona and Other Tales
Author: Arenas Reinaldo, Koch Dolores (TRN)
Publisher: Vintage Books

Mona and Other Tales covers Reinaldo Arenas's entire career: his recently rediscovered debut (which got him a job at the Biblioteca Nacional in Havana), stories written in a political prison, and some of his last works, written in exile. Many of the stories have not previously appeared in English.

Here is the tender story of a boy who recognizes evil for the first time and decides to ignore it; the tale of a writer struggling between the demands of creativity and of fame; common people dealing with changes brought about by revolution and exile; a romp with a famous, dangerous woman in the Metropolitan Museum; an outrageous fantasy that picks up where Garcia Lorca's famous play The House of Bernardo Alba ends. Told with Arenas's famous wit and humanity, Mona makes a perfect introduction to this important writer.

Translated from the Spanish by Dolores Koch.

Arenas Reinaldo, Hurley Andrew (TRN), Hurley Andrew Title : The Color of Summer
Author: Arenas Reinaldo, Hurley Andrew (TRN), Hurley Andrew
Publisher: Penguin Group USA

Critics worldwide have praised Reinaldo Arenas's writing. His extraordinary memoir, Before Night Falls, was named one of the fourteen 'Best Books of 1993' by the editors of The New York Times Book Review and has now been made into a major motion picture.

The Color of Summer, Arenas's finest comic achievement, is also the fulfillment of his life's work, the Pentagonía, a five-volume cycle of novels he began writing in his early twenties. Although it is the penultimate installment in his 'secret history of Cuba,' it was, in fact, the last book Arenas wrote before his death in 1990. A Rabelaisian tale of survival by wits and wit, The Color of Summer is ultimately a powerful and passionate story about the triumph of the human spirit over the forces of political and sexual repression.

Arenas Reinaldo, Hurley Andrew (TRN) Title : The Assault
Author: Arenas Reinaldo, Hurley Andrew (TRN)
Publisher: Penguin Group USA

In this, the final volume in the series of five novels that constitute his 'secret history of Cuba', Reinaldo Arenas paints a harrowing, and at times boldly entertaining, Kafka-esque picture of a dehumanized people living in a world where homosexuality is a crime punishable by death and a cockroach hunt makes for a national holiday. Narrated by a hate-filled government torturer who has become an agent for the 'Bureau of Counterwhispering',' The Assault follows his travels through a blackly humorous shadowland as he winnow out whisperers, sexual deviants, and dissidents of every sort--until memory has been banished and spoken language has been nearly forgotten.

Arenas Reinaldo, Koch Dolores M. (TRN) Title : Before Night Falls
Author: Arenas Reinaldo, Koch Dolores M. (TRN)
Publisher: Penguin Group USA

The shocking memoir by visionary Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas 'is a book above all about being free,' said The New York Review of Books--sexually, politically, artistically. Arenas recounts a stunning odyssey from his poverty-stricken childhood in rural Cuba and his adolescence as a rebel fighting for Castro, through his supression as a writer, imprisonment as a homosexual, his flight from Cuba via the Mariel boat lift, and his subsequent life and the events leading to his death in New York. In what The Miami Herald calls his 'deathbed ode to eroticism,' Arenas breaks through the code of secrecy and silence that protects the privileged in a state where homosexuality is a political crime. Recorded in simple, straightforward prose, this is the true story of the Kafkaesque life and world re-created in the author's acclaimed novels.

Arenas Reinaldo, Hurley Andrew (TRN) Title : Farewell to the Sea
Author: Arenas Reinaldo, Hurley Andrew (TRN)
Publisher: Penguin Group USA

In this brilliant, apocalyptic vision of Castro's Cuba, we meet a young couple who leave the dreariness of Havana and spend six days at a small seaside retreat, where they hope to recapture the desire and carefree spirit that once united them. In a stunning juxtaposition of narrative voices, the wife recounts the grim reality of her marriage, the demands of motherhood, and her loss of freedom, innocence, and hope; while her husband, a disillusioned poet and disenchanted revolutionary, recalls his political struggles and laments the artistic and homosexual freedom that has been denied him. Rich in hallucination, myth and fantasy, Farewell to the Sea is a fierce and unforgettable work that speaks for the entire human condition.

Arenas Reinaldo Title : Prima che sia notte. Autobiografia
Author: Arenas Reinaldo
Publisher: Guanda
