An architect, designer, interior decorator, and columnist for Domus magazine, Tomaso Buzzi (1900–1981) was one of the most important trendsetters for Italian taste in the 1930s and 1940s. This volume provides a complete overview of the refined oeuvre of Buzzi, who worked in close partnership with Venini & Co. in 1932 and 1933.

A splendid catalog devoted to the work of an artist who was responsible for some of the most original glass artworks in art history. Napoleone Martinuzzi became a partner of leading Murano glassmaker Paolo Venini in 1925. In his capacity as the artistic director of V.S.M. Venini & Co., he designed marvelous objects until 1931. This book reviews his entire body of work as a glass designer, consisting of about 600 pieces identified after lengthy and thorough research. Unpublished records in the Archivio Storico Venini have allowed researchers to appreciate the full extent of Martinuzzi’s contribution to the factory’s production and to identify many of his designs, some of which were previously unknown. After devising elegant, clear blown glass objects, the artist went on to explore previously unseen matter like bubble glass and opaque glass in intense and solid colors. In so doing, Martinuzzi designed a wide repertoire of vases, cups, lights, and peculiar decorative objects like fruits, colored glass creatures, and succulent plants, some of which were monumental in size. The book contains a wide range of period photographs, signed designs, and factory drawings.

Through around 300 works, documents, and original drawings from private collections and museums from all over the world, this important volume reconstructs the work and life of Carlo Scarpa from the very beginnings of his career when he worked as artistic director for the Venini glassworks, between 1932 and 1947. It is no coincidence that Scarpa’s glasswork can be organized into no less than thirty distinct styles, differentiated by the technique of execution and the glass construction method used. We need only think of the corrosi (corroded), in which the material is attacked and eaten into by sawdust soaked in hydrofluoric acid.

Il volume ricostruisce i quindici anni della collaborazione artistica di Carlo Scarpa con la vetreria Venini, dal 1932 al 1947. Le opere riunite rappresentano una parte significativa dei primi anni della sua attività: spesso prototipi e creazioni uniche, questi pezzi documentano la straordinaria inventiva progettuale di Scarpa e la varietà di tipologie e decorazioni. Ciò è stato possibile grazie a un'appassionata ricerca svolta in particolare presso l'archivio storico della vetreria, che è stato finalmente ritrovato. L'intera produzione disegnata dall'architetto veneziano è illustrata da circa seicento opere suddivise nelle diverse tipologie di vetro - una trentina - impiegate e/o inventate da Scarpa per dare vita alle sue raffinatissime creazioni. Sono vetri a mezza filigrana, sommersi, lattimi, corrosi, tessuti, granulari, murrine, incisi, battuti, pennellate, a fili, nati dalle sue instancabili sperimentazioni sulla materia e il colore. Un inedito materiale documentario, tra cui disegni originali e foto storiche, completa il catalogo ragionato, raccontando con accuratezza uno degli episodi più importanti dell'epoca d'oro del vetro veneziano del Novecento.
