Ipseità è un romanzo epistolare. Narra le vicende del protagonista del romanzo pirandelliano, 'Uno, nessuno, centomila'. Ritiratosi in una casa di riposo, posta su una collina, ogni giorno si reca presso un laghetto. Seduto su una panchina, scrive delle lettere ai personaggi che, ha impersonato durante la vita passata: Vitangelo, Moscarda, Gengè. In queste riferisce del cammino interiore ed esteriore, compiuto quotidianamente, che varia in esperienze mai esperite in precedenza. Il romanzo si conclude con uno sbigottimento sia per l'autore che per il lettore.

Questo manuale è stato elaborato per coloro che operano in gruppi nei quali si possono realizzare conflitti. Fra questi esiste quello denominato diadico, che avviene tra due individui appartenenti a gruppi diversi o allo stesso gruppo. Poi vi è quello che si sviluppa all'interno dello stesso gruppo, definito intragruppo. concludendo vi è quello che si sviluppa nel confronto tra gruppi e squadre, in questo caso si può parlare di conflitto intergruppo.

Nell'isola di Entopan, hanno rapito il pensiero. Aristo, Lao e Alefa, tre giovani intraprendenti, seguono i percorsi indicatigli dalla guida Chironte, proprio per liberarlo. Lungo il cammino s'imbattono in vari personaggi, che non mentono, ma fingono. Attraverso un labirinto di misteri, trabocchetti e paradossi mentali, dovranno confrontarsi soprattutto con loro stessi. Questa favola brillante e fantasiosa non è altro che un racconto filosofico, un percorso di formazione della filosofia stessa che parte dall'amore per il pensiero, per il sapere, e lo cerca assiduamente.

In questo libro Mario Guarna delinea i tratti di una Spoon River del lento ma costante cammino dell'umanità verso la conquista della trascendenza, partendo dall'assunto che «il vivente fluttua pienamente fra l'evidente e il celato» e che occorre fenomenologicamente un ritorno «alle cose stesse». Nella teoria dell'umorismo di Pirandello, la figura che rimane impressa è quella del 'forestiere dalla vita', colui che 'ha capito il giuoco', e diviene un personaggio 'fuori chiave', che ha preso coscienza del carattere del tutto fittizio del meccanismo sociale e si esclude, si isola, guardando vivere se stesso gli altri dall'alto della sua superiore consapevolezza, rifiutando di assumere la sua 'parte', osservando gli uomini imprigionati dalla 'trappola' con un atteggiamento 'umoristico', di irrisione e insieme di pietà. É quella che Pirandello chiama 'filosofia del lontano': essa consiste nel contemplare la realtà come da un'infinita distanza, in modo da vedere in una prospettiva straniata tutto ciò che l'abitudine ci fa considerare 'normale', e in modo quindi da coglierne l'assurdità, la mancanza totale di senso.
