Ingiustamente oscurati dalla grandezza dell'opera poetica, i racconti di Rubén Darío sono una parte fondamentale del suo universo letterario. A partire dai testi giovanili, in cui il narratore rievoca il mondo meraviglioso della mitologia greca, riscrive le leggende cavalleresche, attualizza i racconti di fate, viene sedotto dagli scenari esotici delle Mille e una notte, riproponendo una sensualità neopagana in chiave moderna, il Darío maturo si avventura in territori oscuri e inquietanti. Dagli apologhi ispirati alla Bibbia, in cui predomina l'afflato mistico, si arriva al racconto del terrore, dove allucinazioni indotte dalle droghe, materializzazioni sepolcrali, fenomeni inspiegabili e presenze diaboliche gettano un velo d'incubo sull'antico mondo di ninfe, fate e principesse.
