Questa spietata disamina delle cause e delle manifestazioni del cattivo gusto in poesia nasce come esercizio collettivo dello Scriblerus Club, il circolo informale di letterati e politici Tory che, a partire dal 1714, furono di fatto proscritti dall'attività pubblica sotto l'incontrastata supremazia Whig.
