Mentre sono al mercato, Milo e Tock si ritrovano in mezzo a una rissa e vengono arrestati da un assurdo agente di polizia, che è al tempo stesso giudice, giuria e guardia carceraria. Mentre sono in carcere, Milo e il suo amico vengono informati dalla 'Strega non tanto cattiva' circa il passato del Regno d'Ingegno: un tempo c'era un unico re che governava su tutte queste terre. Quando i due figli gli successero, nacque tra loro una disputa se fossero più importanti i numeri o le parole.
