![]() ![]() Author: Bolaki Stella (EDT), Broeck Sabine (EDT) Publisher: Univ of Massachusetts Pr Among the most influential and insightful thinkers of her generation, Audre Lorde (1934--1992) inspired readers and activists through her poetry, autobiography, essays, and her political action. Most scholars have situated her work within the context of the women's, gay and lesbian, and black civil rights movements within the United States. However, Lorde forged coalitions with women in Europe, the Caribbean, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Africa, and twenty years after her passing, these alliances remain largely undocumented and unexplored. Audre Lorde's Transnational Legacies is the first book to systematically document and thoroughly investigate Lorde's influence beyond the United States. Arranged in three thematically interrelated sections -- Archives, Connections, and Work -- the volume brings together scholarly essays, interviews, Lorde's unpublished speech about Europe, and personal reflections and testimonials from key figures throughout the world. Using a range of interdisciplinary approaches, contributors assess the reception, translation, and circulation of Lorde's writing and activism within different communities, audiences, and circles. They also shed new light on the work Lorde inspired across disciplinary borders. In addition the volume editors, contributors include Sarah Cefai, Cassandra Ellerbe-Dueck, Paul M. Farber, Tiffany N. Florvil, Katharina Gerund, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Gloria Joseph, Jackie Kay, Marion Kraft, Christiana Lambrinidis, Zeedah Meierhofer-Mangeli, Rina Nissim, Chantal Oakes, Lester C. ![]() ![]() Author: Steneck Nicholas (EDT), Anderson Melissa (EDT), Kleinert Sabine (EDT), Mayer Tony (EDT) Publisher: World Scientific Pub Co Inc With a seeming increase in the number of high-profile cases of research misconduct, there is a need for promoting and upholding the principles for the responsible conduct of research. At the 3rd World Conference on Research Integrity, convened in Montréal in 2013, vital issues relating to ethics and behavior in research environments were discussed at length. This book captures the major content and discussions arising from the conference. The Montréal Conference, like the previous conferences, attracted a diverse group of delegates and speakers, including government and institutional leaders, policy makers, journal editors, officials of research funding agencies, scientists and other researchers, students and postdoctoral fellows, representatives of academic societies and academies, and those responsible for compliance and regulation, as well as many who are engaged in doing empirical research on topics related to research integrity. The aim of this book is to share the ideas emerging from the rich discussion at the conference with scholars and policymakers around the world. It covers the main topics that are today seen as vital to decision making about responsible research. The book also sets the stage for the 4th World Conference on Research Integrity, which will be held in Brazil in mid-2015.This book and the prior World Conference publication, Promoting Research Integrity in a Global Environment, represent the largest ongoing global discussion of issues relating to integrity in research. It provides its readers with the opportunity to learn more about and eventually engage these issues locally or globally with colleagues. € 105,10

![]() ![]() Author: Barron Stephanie, Eckmann Sabine, Bader Graham (CON), Bahlmann Nana (CON), Bergman Lauren (CON) Publisher: Prestel Pub This beautifully illustrated book brings together a dazzling variety of works and provides fresh insight into artistic expressions of life in the Weimar Republic. Between the end of World War I and the Nazi rise to power, Germany's Weimar Republic (1919-1933) was a thriving laboratory of art and culture. As the country experienced unprecedented and often tumultuous social, economic, and political upheaval, many artists rejected Expressionism in favor of a new realism to capture this emerging society. Dubbed Neue Sachlichkeit--New Objectivity--its adherents turned a cold eye on the new Germany: its desperate prostitutes and crippled war veterans, its alienated urban landscapes, its decadent underworld where anything was available for a price. Showcasing 150 works by more than 50 artists, this book reflects the full diversity and strategies of New Objectivity. Organized around five thematic sections, it mixes photography, works on paper, and painting to bring them into a visual dialogue. Artists such as Otto Dix, George Grosz, and Max Beckmann are included alongside Christian Schad, Alexander Kanoldt, Georg Schrimpf, August Sander, Lotte Jacobi, and Aenne Biermann. Also included are essays that examine the politics of New Objectivity and its legacy; its relation to international art movements of the time; the context of gender roles and sexuality; and the influence of new technology and consumer goods. € 66,90

![]() ![]() Author: Altenmuller Eckart (EDT), Schmidt Sabine (EDT), Zimmermann Elke (EDT) Publisher: Oxford University Press Why do we think that we can understand animal voices - such as the aggressive barking of a pet dog, and the longing meows of the family cat? Why do we think of deep voices as dominant and high voices as submissive. Are there universal principles governing our own communication system? Can we even see how close animals are related to us by constructing an evolutionary tree based on similarities and dissimilarities in acoustic signaling? Research on the role of emotions in acoustic communication and its evolution has often been neglected, despite its obvious role in our daily life. When we infect others with our laugh, soothe a crying baby with a lullaby, or get goose bumps listening to classical music, we are barely aware of the complex processes upon which this behavior is based. It is not facial expressions or body language that are affecting us, but sound. They are present in music and speech as "emotional prosody" and allow us to communicate not only verbally but also emotionally. This groundbreaking book presents a thorough exploration into how acoustically conveyed emotions are generated and processed in both animals and man. It is the first volume to bridge the gap between research in the acoustic communication of emotions in humans with those in animals, using a comparative approach. With the communication of emotions being an important research topic for a range of scientific fields, this book is valuable for those in the fields of animal behaviour, anthropology, evolutionary biology, human psychology, linguistics, musicology, and neurology. € 95,50

![]() ![]() Author: Eckmann Sabine Publisher: Univ of Chicago Pr Taking as its impetus a group of important new acquisitions at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, Precarious Worlds explores thematic connections between some of the most influential artists working in Germany today. Works by Franz Ackermann, Cosima von Bonin, Charline von Heyl, Thomas Demand, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Isa Genzken, Sergej Jensen, Michel Majerus, Manfred Pernice, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Corinne Wasmuht are examined in light of how they mediate the radical political and societal transformations that followed the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War as well as the worldwide effects of the digital age. Characteristics such as the fragility of objects, the disorientation of visual perception and geographical location, and the instability of both historical memory and notions of the “real” recur throughout these otherwise diverse and unique paintings, photographs, installations, sculptures, and fabric works. This fully illustrated color catalog includes an essay by Sabine Eckmann and extended entries on each work by Svea Bräunert. € 28,10

![]() ![]() Author: Eckmann Sabine, Malone Meredith, Weissman Benjamin (CON) Publisher: Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum Thaddeus Strode's vibrant large-scale paintings are universes unto themselves: wild mash-ups of California surf and skateboard culture, Zen philosophy, rock music, literature, film, and comic books. Absolutes and Nothings marks the artist's first major museum show, presented as part of the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum's Contemporary Projects series. Strode's images draw on a wealth of motifs inspired by a broad range of sources in popular culture, freely combined with the artist's own creations. The strength and visual pleasure of Strode's aesthetic come from his self-reflexive combination of painterly styles and incongruous elements, in which enigmatic texts, phantoms, monsters, and castaways play off one another to produce cryptic—and captivating—fantasies. Including over two dozen full-color images of works from 2001 to the present, as well as essays by Sabine Eckmann, Meredith Malone, and Benjamin Weissman, Absolutes and Nothings is a fascinating premier monograph from one of our most vital and exciting contemporary visual artists. € 28,10
