L'invasione russa della Cecoslovacchia nel 1968 non ha solo conculcato i diritti umani, la democrazia, la giustizia: ha ridotto a «un foglio di carta in fiamme / dove scompare la poesia» - scriveva Kundera nel 1980 citando l'amato Nezval - una «grande cultura». Una cultura unica, che la «capitale magica d'Europa» ha forgiato lungo i secoli, e che ha conosciuto l'apogeo con Kafka, Hasek e Janacek, artefici dei «tre pannelli del quadro dell'inferno futuro»: «labirinto burocratico», «idiozia militare», «disperazione concentrazionaria». Tracciare il ritratto di Praga significava allora, per Kundera, riportare alla luce un'Atlantide inabissata, salvare una visione del mondo renitente a «identificarsi con la Storia» e a «cogliere nei suoi spettacoli serietà e senso». Ma noi lettori non potremo fare a meno, oggi, di riconoscere in quel ritratto, attraversato da un fremito di commossa nostalgia, un autoritratto, che rivela, meglio di qualunque saggio critico, la genealogia segreta da cui scaturisce l'opera di Kundera. Dentro al suo laboratorio ci conduce anche Ottantanove parole, un dizionario personale nato nel 1985 dall'esigenza, per lui che ancora scriveva in ceco ma pensava ormai a come ogni frase sarebbe suonata in francese, di chiarire al nuovo pubblico le «parole chiave», le «parole trabocchetto», le «parole d'amore» attorno alle quali erano costruiti i suoi romanzi - e tuttora essenziale per chi li ami e voglia conoscerli meglio.

In sette testi relativamente indipendenti ma collegati come altrettante tappe di un unico saggio, Kundera ci parla di quella creatura singolare, imprevedibile, grandiosa e delicata che è il romanzo europeo («arte nata come eco della risata di Dio»). Il suo discorso scavalca con sicurezza ogni pretesa di rigido inquadramento teorico e si dedica invece a un'analisi amorosa di ciò che il romanzo, creatura polimorfa, diventa nelle mani di scrittori così diversi come Kafka e Cervantes, Broch e Tolstoj, Gombrowicz e Flaubert, Diderot e Musil, Rabelais e Sterne - e infine Kundera: perché qui si troveranno i due testi dove ha detto l'essenziale per chi vuole accedere al segreto dei suoi stessi romanzi.

Nel giugno del 1967, poco dopo la lettera aperta di Solzenicyn sulla censura nell'Urss, si tiene in Cecoslovacchia il IV Congresso dell'Unione degli scrittori. Un congresso diverso da tutti i precedenti - memorabile. Ad aprire i lavori, con un discorso di un'audacia limpida e pacata, è Milan Kundera, allora già autore di successo. Se si guarda al destino della giovane nazione ceca, e più in generale delle «piccole nazioni», appare evidente - dichiara Kundera - che la sopravvivenza di un popolo dipende dalla forza dei suoi valori culturali. Il che esige il rifiuto di qualsiasi interferenza da parte dei «vandali», gli ideologi del regime. La rottura fra scrittori e potere è consumata, e la Primavera di Praga confermerà sino a che punto la rinascita delle arti, della letteratura, del cinema avesse accelerato il disfacimento della struttura politica. A questo discorso, che segna un'epoca, si ricollega un intervento del 1983, destinato a «rimodellare la mappa mentale dell'Europa» prima del 1989. Con una veemenza che il nitore argomentativo non riesce a occultare, Kundera accusa l'Occidente di avere assistito inerte alla sparizione del suo estremo lembo, essenziale crogiolo culturale. Polonia, Ungheria e Cecoslovacchia, che all'Europa appartengono a tutti gli effetti, e che fra il 1956 e il 1970 hanno dato vita a grandiose rivolte, sorrette dal «connubio di cultura e vita, creazione e popolo», non sono infatti agli occhi dell'Occidente che una parte del blocco sovietico. Una «visione centroeuropea del mondo», quella qui proposta, che oggi appare ancora più preziosa e illuminante.
