In base a materiali d'archivio l'autore ha ricostruito il personaggio della prostituta Kata Nesiba, la vita e le condizioni di lavoro da quando, nel 1830, sbarcò con la madre dal battello che le aveva portate sulla riva del Danubio a Belgrado, ma anche l'atmosfera e la vita quotidiana nella Serbia dell'epoca. Si tratta del periodo interessante della diarchia, nel corso del lento processo di acquisizione dell'indipendenza serba e della liberazione dagli Ottomani. La vita quotidiana di una grande città, non ancora capitale, i traffici di ogni genere, i cambi di monete che denotano una società multietnica (si direbbe oggi), le leggi spesso in contrasto tra loro, i soprusi dei diversi poteri e delle relative amministrazioni, sono narrati con verve e ironia, mostrando le difficoltà per gli abitanti comuni. Molte illustrazioni accompagnano il libro e offrono spunti di osservazione inaspettati.
