Vathek è un giovane e potente Calio. Un giorno giunge al palazzo di Samarah uno straniero dalle orribili fattezze, con delle sciabole su cui sono incise parole scritte in una lingua sconosciuta. Nessuno sa decifrarle, fino a quando un vecchio ci riesce e propone al Calio un patto sacrilego e scellerato: entrerà in possesso dei tesori del 'Palazzo del Fuoco Sotterraneo', ma dovrà rinnegare Maometto e assecondare le sue terribili richieste, che prevedono orrendi crimini. Seguendo le sue istruzioni, Vathek inizia un viaggio verso l'inferno, alla ricerca dei tesori del mitico Palazzo del Fuoco Sotterraneo.

Ma il significato dell'opera è piuttosto nella vena satirica con la quale è marcato il passaggio di sensibilità di un'intera epoca che si avvia a rinnegare gli eccessi di formalismo della pittura fiamminga e olandese, da un lato, e il culto di uno sterile classicismo dall'altro, per farsi romantica esaltazione dell'individuo e della natura, secondo la lezione impartita al giovane Beckford da Alexander Cozens.

Agli inizi di aprile del 1783, Dreams Waking Thoughts and Incidents, il volume che raccoglie le memorie di viaggio di William Beckford, è pronto per la pubblicazione. William Beckford's Vathek is a touchstone of eighteenth-century Orientalism and of the Gothic novel. Beckford's later work, The Episodes of Vathek, shares Vathek's irreverent and decadent style, and an edition that unites the two has long been overdue. The Broadview edition includes a newly discovered early version of the first episode, never before in print, that centres on male-male love, as well as the previously published version that was re-written by Beckford as a heterosexual narrative. This edition based on that of 1823—the last on edited by the author—also introduces The Episodes in the order Beckford planned, and incorporates his final corrections.

William Beckford (1760-1844) inherited an immense fortune on his tenth birthday, and spent the next fifty years wasting it with reckless abandon. At the age of nineteen, he was forced to flee the country after his passionate affair with the Earl of Devon was exposed by a scandalised relative. He was a Member of Parliament and a traveller who spent large sums of money collecting rare books, curiosities and paintings for the embellishment of his Gothic folly, Fonthill Abbey, where he lived in opulent seclusion until bankruptcy finally forced him to sell it, in 1822.
