Nato in una famiglia nobile senese, colto e appassionato di musica, al momento dell'ingresso dell'Italia nella Prima guerra mondiale decide di partire volontario automobilista per la Croce Rossa, mettendo a disposizione sé stesso, la propria automobile e il proprio autista. Eppure non è fra i richiamati, non è interventista, è anzi visceralmente contrario alla guerra.
