Sima Guang, storico della Dinastia Song settentrionale, ha redatto l'importante opera storiografica cinese Specchio comprensivo per l'aiuto nel governo (Zizhi Tongjian), che consta di 294 capitoli. Ha impiegato diciannove anni per completare l'opera che copre 1362 anni di storia cinese, dal 403 a.C. al 959 d.C. Fin da piccolo, Sima Guang era particolarmente sveglio. Un giorno, mentre giocava con gli amici, uno di loro cadde dentro una giara piena d'acqua, ma lui non si fece prendere dal panico e riuscì a trovare la soluzione migliore per salvarlo. Un tempo considerato ambiente remotissimo e desolato, il Tibet ha ospitato da fine Neolitico una cultura e una civiltà ricche e vivaci, che nel VII sec. d.C. adottarono il Buddismo come religione entrando in simbiosi con l'Impero Cinese, fino a diventarne parte integrante sotto la dinastia Yuan. Esso rimase nella giurisdizione cinese attraverso le dinastie Ming e Qing, finché, nel tardo Ottocento, la pressione britannica, montante da Sud, non risultò in una aggressione armata ai suoi danni. La crisi della Cina imperiale, fiaccata da 'Trattati Ineguali' e 'Diplomazia delle Cannoniere' impedì all'autorità centrale di intervenire in sua difesa, né più efficiente fu il Governo nazionalista, che nel 1911 sostituì la corte imperiale. Si dovette attendere l'avanzata dell'Esercito Popolare di Liberazione, tra il 1950 e il 1951, per vedere il Tibet ricongiunto alla famiglia delle nazionalità cinesi, in cui, per le proprie peculiarità etno-culturali, ha ricevuto il rango di Regione Autonoma, con l'applicazione di statuti e trattamenti speciali.

È abbastanza comune, quando ci si avvicina alla storia del Tibet e dei suoi Dalai Lama, chiedersi anche quali siano le origini e le varie traversie del sistema religioso del buddismo lamaista che ha caratterizzato per secoli questa regione.
