Tocqueville Alexis de; Vivanti C. (cur.) Title : La democrazia in America
Author: Tocqueville Alexis de; Vivanti C. (cur.)
Publisher: Einaudi

Tocqueville Alexis de, Goldhammer Arthur Title : Alexis De Tocqueville: Democracy in America
Author: Tocqueville Alexis de, Goldhammer Arthur
Publisher: Library of America

Democracy in America (1835-40) is arguably the most perceptive and influential book ever written about American politics and society. This volume presents Alexis de Tocqueville's masterpiece in an entirely new translation, the first to capture fully the precision and grace of his style while providing a rigorous and faithful rendering of his profound ideas and observations.
In Democracy in America he vividly describes the unprecedented "equality of conditions" found in the United States and explores its implications for European society in the emerging modern era. His book provides enduring insight into the political consequences of widespread property ownership, the potential dangers to liberty inherent in majority rule, the importance of civil institutions in an individualistic culture dominated by the pursuit of material self-interest, the influence of the press and the judiciary in American politics, and the vital role of religion in American life, while prophetically examining the widening differences between the northern and southern states.

Author: Tocqueville Alexis de, Furet Francois (EDT), Melonio Francoise (EDT), Furet Francois (INT), Melonio Francoise (INT), Kahan Alan S. (TRN)
Publisher: Univ of Chicago Pr

The Old Regime and the Revolution is Alexis de Tocqueville's great meditation on the origins and meanings of the French Revolution. One of the most profound and influential studies of this pivotal event, it remains a relevant and stimulating discussion of the problem of preserving individual and political freedom in the modern world. Alan Kahan's translation provides a faithful, readable rendering of Tocqueville's last masterpiece, and includes notes and variants which reveal Tocqueville's sources and include excerpts from his drafts and revisions. The introduction by France's most eminent scholars of Tocqueville and the French Revolution, Françoise Mélonio and the late François Furet, provides a brilliant analysis of the work.

Alexis de Tocqueville Title : Writings on Empire and Slavery
Author: Alexis de Tocqueville
Publisher: BERTRAMS PRINT ON DEMAND

After completing his research for Democracy in America, Alexis de Tocqueville turned to the French consolidation of its empire in North Africa, which he believed deserving of similar attention. Tocqueville began studying Algerian history and culture, making two trips to Algeria in 1841 and 1846. He quickly became one of France's foremost experts on the country and wrote essays, articles, official letters, and parliamentary reports on such diverse topics as France's military and administrative policies in North Africa, the people of the Maghrib, his own travels in Algeria, and the practice of Islam. Throughout, Tocqueville consistently defended the French imperial project, a position that stands in tension with his admiration for the benefits of democracy he witnessed in America.

Although Tocqueville never published a book-length study of French North Africa, his various writings on the subject provide as invaluable a portrait of French imperialism as Democracy in America does of the Early Republic period in American history. In Writings on Empire and Slavery, Jennifer Pitts has selected and translated nine of his most important dispatches on Algeria, which offer startling new insights into both Tocqueville's political thought and French liberalism's attitudes toward the political, military, and moral aspects of France's colonial expansion. The volume also includes six articles Tocqueville wrote during the same period calling for the emancipation of slaves in France's Caribbean colonies.

Tocqueville Alexis de, Bevan Gerald E., Kramnick Isaac Title : Democracy in America
Author: Tocqueville Alexis de, Bevan Gerald E., Kramnick Isaac
Publisher: Penguin Classics

In 1831 Alexis de Tocqueville, a young French aristocrat and ambitious civil servant, made a nine-month journey throughout America. The result was Democracy in America, a monumental study of the life and institutions of the evolving nation. Tocqueville looked to the flourishing democratic system in America as a possible model for post-revolutionary France, believing that the egalitarian ideals it enshrined reflected the spirit of the age and even divine will. His insightful work has become one of the most influential political texts ever written on America and an indispensable authority on democracy.

This new edition is the only one that contains all Tocqueville's writings on America, including the rarely-translated Two Weeks in the Wilderness, an account of Tocqueville's travels in Michigan among the Iroquois, and Excursion to Lake Oneida.

This translation of Alexis de Tocqueville's political classic Democracy in America by Henry Reeve, a distinguished nineteenth-century British man of letters and friend of Tocqueville, is the only contemporaneous translation of Tocqueville's work into English. Unlike some recent translations that slavishly hew to a literal word-for-word translation of the text, this Reeve translation treats Tocqueville's book as the great piece of literature it is. Reeve captures Tocqueville's ideas and renders them into beautiful English worthy of a native speaker. In fact, it was for these reasons Tocqueville himself approved of Reeve's translation.

Tocqueville Alexis de, Mansfield Harvey C. (EDT), Winthrop Delba (EDT) Title : Democracy in America
Author: Tocqueville Alexis de, Mansfield Harvey C. (EDT), Winthrop Delba (EDT)
Publisher: Univ of Chicago Pr

Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-59) came to America in 1831 to see what a great republic was like. What struck him most was the country's equality of conditions, its democracy. The book he wrote on his return to France, Democracy in America, is both the best ever written on democracy and the best ever written on America. It remains the most often quoted book about the United States, not only because it has something to interest and please everyone, but also because it has something to teach everyone.

When it was published in 2000, Harvey Mansfield and Delba Winthrop's new translation of Democracy in America?only the third since the original two-volume work was published in 1835 and 1840?was lauded in all quarters as the finest and most definitive edition of Tocqueville's classic thus far. Mansfield and Winthrop have restored the nuances of Tocqueville's language, with the expressed goal "to convey Tocqueville's thought as he held it rather than to restate it in comparable terms of today." The result is a translation with minimal interpretation, but with impeccable annotations of unfamiliar references and a masterful introduction placing the work and its author in the broader contexts of political philosophy and statesmanship.

Author: Tocqueville Alexis de, Furet Francois (EDT), Melonio Francoise (EDT), Kahan Alan S. (TRN), Furet Francois
Publisher: Univ of Chicago Pr

With his monumental work The Old Regime and the Revolution, Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859)-best known for his classic Democracy in America-- envisioned a multivolume philosophic study of the origins of modern France that would examine the implications of French history on the nature and development of democratic society. Volume 1, which covered the eighteenth-century background to the Revolution, was published to great acclaim in 1856. On the continuation of this project, he wrote: "When this Revolution has finished its work, [this volume] will show what that work really was, and what the new society which has come from that violent labor is, what the Revolution has taken away and what it has preserved from that old regime against which it was directed."

Tocqueville died in the midst of this work. Here in volume 2--in clear, up-to-date English--is all that he had completed, including the chapters he started for a work on Napoleon, notes and analyses he made in the course of researching and writing the first volume, and his notes on his preparation for his continuation. Based on the new French edition of The Old Regime, most of the translated texts have never before appeared in English, and many of those that have appeared have been considerable altered. More than ever before, readers will be able to see how Tocqueville's account of the Revolution would have come out, had he lived to finish it. This handsomely produced volume completes the set and is essential reading for anyone interested in the French Revolution or in Tocqueville's thought.

Tocqueville Alexis de, Reeve Henry (TRN) Title : Democracy in America
Author: Tocqueville Alexis de, Reeve Henry (TRN)
Publisher: Bantam Classic & Loveswept

From America's call for a free press to its embrace of the capitalist system, Democracy in America--first published in 1835--enlightens, entertains, and endures as a brilliant study of our national government and character. Philosopher John Stuart Mill called it "among the most remarkable productions of our time." Woodrow Wilson wrote that de Tocqueville's ability to illuminate the actual workings of American democracy was "possibly without rival."

For today's readers, de Tocqueville's concern about the effect of majority rule on the rights of individuals remains deeply meaningful. His shrewd observations about the "almost royal prerogatives" of the president and the need for virtue in elected officials are particularly prophetic. His profound insights into the great rewards and responsibilities of democratic government are words every American needs to read, contemplate, and remember.

Tocqueville Alexis de Title : Democrazia, libertà e religione. Pensieri liberali
Author: Tocqueville Alexis de
Publisher: Armando Editore

Author: Tocqueville Alexis de; Mazziotti Di Celso S. (cur.)
Publisher: Guida
