L'Odissea di Omero da poesia a documento storico: una lettura rivoluzionaria che vede oggi la sua seconda edizione, la più completa al mondo, di molto ampliata, aggiornata, nonché completamente rivista dall'Autore. Già al Liceo Armin Wolf era sulle tracce della geografia dell'Odissea. Tali questioni hanno accompagnato per tutta una vita quello che in seguito sarebbe diventato professore di storia medievale. A 33 anni pubblicò, assieme a suo fratello maggiore Hans-Helmut, un primo libro sul 'Cammino di Ulisse' (1968). Lo elaborò e allargò continuamente per nuove edizioni (1983, 1990 e 2009). Una ricerca di straordinaria importanza per la storia del Mediterraneo e non solo.

In questo libro non viene offerta semplicemente l'ennesima localizzazione dell'Odissea, bensì è sviluppato il metodo con cui si può stabilire in modo critico se in generale l'Odissea faccia riferimento a luoghi geografici reali o si svolga solamente nei mari della fantasia. Il risultato della ricerca, dispiegata alla scrivania e poi, in numerosi viaggi sul posto - con Omero alla mano - fra il 1962 e il 2016, verificata, precisata e documentata attraverso un cospicuo materiale illustrativo, in gran parte mai pubblicato prima, è il seguente: Omero descrive effettivamente un (suo?) viaggio. Questo viaggio si svolge intorno alla Sicilia e attraverso l'Italia. Il poeta localizza le avventure di Ulisse presso le coste che i Greci del suo tempo, cioè nel sec. VIII a.C., stavano scoprendo nel corso della colonizzazione in Occidente. In tal modo egli trasmette il più antico documento testuale della storia della Tunisia, di Malta, della Sicilia e dell'Italia. Il libro contiene inoltre la prima storia delle localizzazioni dell'Odissea avvenute fino ad oggi. La convinzione, ampiamente invalsa, che l'Odissea si svolga in modo fiabesco, viene messa criticamente in discussione.

Pur rimanendo debitore alla sua 'guida' italiana, Goethe non interpretò però il Cenacolo alla luce della sensibilità indagatrice e 'antiquaria' dell'età neoclassica, ma innalzando il capolavoro a icona del genio universale con un coinvolgimento emotivo e un'enfasi retorica ormai decisamente romantici.
