Nel 1958 Morton Smith recupera nel Monastero greco-ortodosso di San Saba (Palestina) una lettera scritta da Clemente d'Alessandria. Si tratta della celebre "lettera di Mar Saba", che reca due citazioni tratte da un "Vangelo secondo Marco", ben diverso da quello inserito nei sinottici. Secondo Clemente si tratta di una versione segreta, che contiene episodi mai raccontati: scene inedite del Messia che lo vedono in imbarazzante intimità con uomini - atteggiamenti che sembrano indicare la pratica di una forma di magia sessuale. Smith sostiene che la lettera di Mar Saba sia inserita all'interno di un'edizione a stampa del 1646 delle opere di Ignazio di Antiochia, scoperta che apre un acceso dibattito tra i suoi sostenitori e i suoi detrattori, che lo accusano di aver falsificato la lettera. Smith (ancient history, Columbia U.) planned such a collection in 1972, but got caught up in other commitments and did not accomplish it before his death in 1991. The two volumes include about half of the papers he selected plus some written after 1972.
