Nel giugno 2018 Carl Safina e la moglie Patricia trovano nel giardino di casa un «batuffolo sporco e arruffato di piccole piume, vivo per un soffio»: un gufetto neonato che, scopriranno, è in realtà una femmina di assiolo americano orientale. Decidono di adottarla, per curarla e proteggerla finché non sarà in grado di badare a se stessa, e la chiamano Alfie. Occorrerà un anno e mezzo prima che Safina possa arrischiarsi ad aprire la porta della voliera senza timore di esporla a gravi rischi, ma da questa miracolosa convivenza scaturiranno un legame saldo e profondo, e un libro denso di rigorose osservazioni etologiche, intuizioni acute e riflessioni che varcano l'ambito strettamente scientifico. Secondo un pregiudizio diffuso, la «cultura» sarebbe un tratto distintivo ed esclusivo di Homo sapiens. Proseguendo il lavoro innovativo avviato con Al di là delle parole, Carl Safina evidenzia l'infondatezza di quel luogo comune e mostra come, al contrario, il rapporto tra «innato» e «appreso» coinvolga le intelligenze e le competenze di molti «animali non umani». Oppure, di fronte a uno stormo di are macao - vistosi pappagalli dalle code ondeggianti «simili a comete infuocate» -, riflette sul ruolo della bellezza quale motore segreto dell'evoluzione. In questa visione complessa e ramificata le varie specie da lui prese in esame non sono più dunque tessere intercambiabili del mosaico della vita, ma dimostrano la loro individualità irriducibile e insieme la loro contiguità rispetto all'uomo. Un'alterità/prossimità che Safina esplora in ogni sfumatura, cogliendone i punti di contatto e affrontando le vertiginose domande che ne scaturiscono. Negli ultimi decenni le scienze biologiche hanno ricostruito i tratti evolutivi che ci legano agli altri animali (dai pesci ai primati) sul piano morfologico e genetico. Al punto da mettere in dubbio, ancora una volta, la tesi secondo la quale l'uomo sarebbe la misura di tutte le cose.
