Ma un giorno Soldier non rientra a casa, e Beaut è costretto a trovare un nuovo compagno, un pugile con cui però non è lo stesso. Quando infine Soldier torna, nell'inverno più freddo che si ricordi, la verità che si trova davanti non è quella che sembra in apparenza.

Fresco di Vietnam, sfregiato in modo orrendo, Garnet Montrose fa ritorno alla sua cittadina d'origine in Virginia e diventa immediatamente un paria. Schifato dai suoi amici per il suo aspetto, ma tutt'altro che scoraggiato, decide di riprendere il corteggiamento della sua antica fiamma dei tempi del liceo, la vedova Rance. L'unico a rimanergli accanto sarà un altro sbandato, un ragazzino bellissimo e sdentato che ha assunto come suo tuttofare, che legge per lui, consegna le sue lettere d'amore, gli lava i piedi come fosse un dio.

Chissà che non siano le stesse ordalie dell'autore, quelle di un disperato che barricato dentro una cabina telefonica cerca qualcuno a caso a cui poter raccontare una storia, la sua, fatta di una moglie stanca di topi, pappa d'avena e appartamenti fatiscenti. James Purdy del resto ha faticato a incontrare il gusto del grande pubblico e il suo seguito è sempre stato costituito da un manipolo di devoti ben nascosti. Fuori da tutti i giri e alieno alle mode letterarie, come scrive Giordano Tedoldi nella postfazione a questo libro, Purdy non ha fatto parte nemmeno di una controcultura; piuttosto è sempre e' stato contro la cultura stessa. I racconti contenuti in 'A casa quando è buio' sembrano confermare questa sua tensione verso un'aporia finale, una continua evocazione di spettri e assenze attraverso la parola e il simbolo. La scrittura di Purdy è cava, i suoi sono sempre incontri mancati e su di essi aleggia incombente un senso di minaccia. Dialoghi platonici irti di 'non sequitur' che indagano il baratro, il cuore oscuro dell'uomo, la sua vulnerabilità, e i desideri che si agitano sotto maniere e abiti inappuntabili. Non sappiamo se sia Mr Diehl, oscenamente bagnato come un tritone, a impartire una lezione alla povera Polly, ma leggendo la storia di questo alterco a bordo piscina la nostra quiete è incrinata. Quando due amici discettano a pranzo di un collega culturista il realismo borghese è solo apparente e il quotidiano sconfina nell'onirico. Un attraversamento che diventa definitivo nell'ultima storia di questa raccolta, un sermone all'umanità firmato da Lui in persona.

James Purdy e la sua scrittura rimangono un rebus oggi come ieri. Amato da autori che non potrebbero essere più diversi - tra gli altri Jonathan Franzen, Gore Vidal e David Means che firma l'introduzione a questo libro -, non ha mai incontrato il favore del grande pubblico né lo ha mai ricercato. Forse proprio perché non l'abbiamo capito meriterebbe ancora un'altra chance per confonderci e sviarci, per mostrarci come la letteratura possa ancora essere un oggetto misterioso che prescinde da regole di scrittura fissate come fossero le tavole del tempio. La prosa di Purdy potrebbe suonare anacronistica, con le sue didascalie, il suo marchiano 'tell don't show', questi personaggi che fulminano a bruciapelo gli interlocutori con domande sul senso delle cose, stridenti nella loro chiarezza e crudeli nel loro essere stralunate. I neon di un cinema notturno piuttosto equivoco squillano 'uomini uomini uomini', e nella sala buia qualche marchettaro è intento a conoscere col tatto corpi e fremiti propri e altrui. Così come gli Holden efebici che perlustrano gli anfratti più bui di un parco sordido varcano quel territorio di confine che è l'omosessualità, allo stesso modo la lingua di Purdy sta e si misura fra ciò che dice e ciò che esclude dall'esser detto, ciò che rimane fuori ma soprattutto sotto l'abito di parole confezionato da questo formalissimo sarto letterario. Sotto una spessa patina di urbanità e manierismi, pulsa una voragine di desiderio e gli interpreti azzimati e ossequiosi di queste turpitudini mai esibite, ma solo ruminate e vissute, hanno un'onomastica e una 'quirkine

'Rose e cenere' è ambientato nella Chicago dei quartieri poveri alla vigilia della seconda guerra mondiale. E' stato scritto che Purdy pratica una specie di metafisica del sordido e della degradazione. I suoi eroi sono devastati da ossessioni, nevrosi e complessi, e corrono verso la catastrofe; eppure questa loro discesa all'inferno si risolve paradossalmente in ascesi, in catarsi: come se appunto occorresse attraversare i territori dell'abiezione per arrivare a una dolorosa dignità, o per ritrovare le proprie radici.

Un certo Bernie, 'scrittore della domenica', decide di trarre un romanzo da un fatto di cronaca nera. L'occasione gli viene offerta da un titolo di giornale: 'Famigerato bruto dimesso dal carcere. Cabot Wright torna a Brooklin'. E' un giovane finanziere che ha commesso circa trecento violenze carnali su cui si puntano gli occhi dell'industria culturale che nella sua vicenda intravede il soggetto ideale per un best seller. Trovato un editore, Bernie sente l'esigenza di documentarsi, ma Cabot non ricorda più nulla. Il libro resta così incompiuto, ma offre l'occasione per una ricerca della verità che non ha niente a che vedere con quella dell'editore e della società.
