In coerenza coi principi enunciati nella Carta di Torino, L'auto storica dal cuore alla pelle si propone di fornire ai restauratori i riferimenti storici generali riguardanti la tecnica, i metodi di fabbricazione e i canoni estetici esistenti all'epoca in cui il veicolo è stato concepito e fabbricato, focalizzando l'esposizione sull'automobile di grande produzione con motore a benzina. Dopo una breve premessa sui tentativi compiuti negli anni che precedono la nascita dell'automobile, il libro descrive le tappe principali della sua evoluzione tecnica e dei suoi metodi di fabbricazione, anche perché quelli più antichi sono molto simili a quelli che il moderno restauratore deve conoscere per svolgere la propria attività. Il libro si completa con una descrizione dell'evoluzione dello stile che, pur profondamente legato agli aspetti precedenti, si è dimostrato un elemento propulsore della diffusione dell'automobile, tanto da costituirne spesso la principale motivazione d'acquisto. Gli Autori si augurano che la possibilità di trovare in un solo libro questa sintesi, possa essere utile ai futuri restauratori e possa anche stimolare alla lettura tutti gli appassionati di questo particolare settore.

Tutte le curiosità tecniche sulle poco note automobili a vapore: come e quando nacquero, chi studiò il loro funzionamento, i dettagli tecnici delle produzioni di Serpollet, Stanley, White e Doble ed il loro possibile impiego futuro.

Quest'opera, scritta da due professori del Politecnico di Torino, vuole farci conoscere l'evoluzione di una tecnologia che ci ha portato ai veicoli attuali, partendo dai veicoli a trazione animale. Nei vari capitoli quest'evoluzione viene trattata a partire dal veicolo a propulsione meccanica per poi narrare la nascita dell'automobile e la conquistata forma aerodinamica con il susseguirsi di tutte le varie componenti dell'autoveicolo attraverso il telaio e la carrozzeria, le sospensioni e lo sterzo e tutte quante le altre parti.

“The Automotive Body” consists of two volumes. The first volume produced the needful cultural background on the body; it described the body and its components in use on most kinds of cars and industrial vehicles: the quantity of drawings that are presented allows the reader to familiarize with the design features and to understand functions, design motivations and fabrication feasibility, in view of the existing production processes. The purpose of this second volume is to explain the links which exist between satisfying the needs of the customer (either driver or passenger) and the specifications for vehicle design, and between the specifications for vehicle system and components. For this study a complete vehicle system must be considered, including, according to the nature of functions that will be discussed, more component classes than considered in Volume I, and, sometimes, also part of the chassis and the powertrain. These two books about the vehicle body may be added to those about the chassis and are part of a series sponsored by ATA (the Italian automotive engineers association) on the subject of automotive engineering; they follow the first book, published in 2005 in Italian only, about automotive transmission.They cover automotive engineering from every aspect and are the result of a five-year collaboration between the Polytechnical University of Turin and the University of Naples on automotive engineering.
