Reuben Sachs, pubblicato nel 1888, fu l'ultimo romanzo di Amy Levy. Reuben, un giovane e brillante avvocato appartenente a una delle famiglie ebree più in vista di Londra, è diviso tra le ambizioni personali, condivise dalla sua comunità, e i suoi sentimenti per Judith, una cugina di classe inferiore, che sarebbe un ostacolo per la sua carriera. Sebbene sia Reuben a dare il nome al romanzo, ne è Judith, con la sua evoluzione interiore, la vera protagonista. Amy Levy riversò in quest'opera, piuttosto breve e nondimeno complessa, le difficoltà incontrate in prima persona nel definire la propria identità come individuo e come donna nella comunità anglo-giudaica vittoriana, dimostrando una penetrante comprensione delle dinamiche sociali e culturali che vi erano sottese. Amy Levy (1861-1889), poetessa, saggista e narratrice femminista dell'età vittoriana, apparteneva a una famiglia della borghesia ebraica di Londra. Lasciata l'università, viaggiò a lungo in Europa, in Germania, Svizzera e Italia. Nella sua breve esistenza scrisse tre libri di poesie (Xantippe and Other Verse, A Minor Poet, A London Plane-Tree), saggi e novelle, tra le quali Cohen di Trinity e Wise in her Generation, e tre romanzi, The Romance of a Shop; Reuben Sachs: A Sketch e Miss Meredith. Morì suicida, all'età di ventisette anni, nella casa londinese dei suoi genitori. Con 'Miss Meredith', pubblicato appena un anno dopo 'Il carteggio Aspern' di Henry James, Amy Levy affronta in modo assai personale e con uno scioglimento inaspettatamente felice il 'tema internazionale' così caro al grande scrittore americano. Il volume presenta due riscritture del mito di Medea ad opera di Augusta Webster ed Amy Levy, autrici attive nel periodo vittoriano, studiose delle lingue classiche e sostenitrici delle rivendicazioni del movimento femminista, che in Italia hanno avuto fino ad ora scarsa attenzione. L'edizione, oltre che dalla traduzione, è corredata da un'introduzione e da due ampi saggi che analizzano i testi e si presentano come contributi filologico-letterari in prospettiva comparatistica, indagando il rapporto che entrambe le opere intrattengono con i modelli antichi e contemporanei e mostrandone le innovazioni peculiari. Sia l'opera di Webster che quella di Levy si inseriscono nella tendenza delle scrittrici vittoriane a dar voce a protagoniste femminili e ad affrontare tematiche riguardanti la posizione delle donne attraverso la mediazione delle eroine mitologiche, delle quali si riappropriano ridisegnandone i contorni. Opere originali e innovative, meritano entrambe di essere inserite nel canone della ricezione moderna del mito e di essere riconosciute quali antesignane delle rivisitazioni tardo-novecentesche che si focalizzano su tematiche quali la lotta di potere nel rapporto fra i sessi e il desiderio di emancipazione sociale e politica delle donne.
