Publisher: McSweeneys Books

Each issue of the quarterly is completely redesigned. There have been hardcovers and paperbacks, an issue with two spines, an issue with a magnetic binding, an issue that looked like a bundle of junk mail, and an issue that looked like a sweaty human head. McSweeney’s has won multiple literary awards, including two National Magazine Awards for fiction, and has had numerous stories appear in The Best American Magazine Writing, the O. Henry Awards anthologies, and The Best American Short Stories. Design awards given to the quarterly include the AIGA 50 Books Award, the AIGA 365 Illustration Award, and the Print Design Regional Award.

Murray Thomas H. (EDT), Johnston Josephine (EDT) Title : Trust and Integrity in Biomedical Research
Author: Murray Thomas H. (EDT), Johnston Josephine (EDT)
Publisher: Johns Hopkins Univ Pr

News of financial entanglements among biomedical companies and researchers has increasingly called into question the worth and integrity of medical studies, nearly three-fifths of which are funded by industry. This volume assesses the ethical, quantitative, and qualitative questions posed by the current financing of biomedical research.

The ten essays collected here reflect the wide range of opinions about perceived financial conflicts of interest in medical studies. The opening section provides an overview of the issue, describing the origins of, and concerns raised by, dubious financial arrangements; explaining how certain common situations intensify problematic funding structures; weighing the risks and benefits of commercialized research funding; and detailing the nature, extent, and consequences of the present relationship among academe, government, and industry in the health sciences. The second section compares how the idea of conflicts of interest differs in biomedical research, legal work, and journalism. It includes a challenging look at the term itself and an argument for managed financial incentives. The final section describes and analyzes the existing regulatory regime, poses questions and directions for future self and external regulation, and provides perspectives from a third-party research company.

This considered, balanced discussion will interest scholars of bioethics, public health, and health policy.

Hines Thomas S. Title : Architecture of the Sun
Author: Hines Thomas S.
Publisher: Rizzoli Intl Pubns

An authoritative survey of the masters of twentieth-century modernist architecture in Los Angeles. This revisionist study explores the history of modernist architecture in Greater Los Angeles from the early twentieth century to the 1970s, focusing on both its regional and international contexts. Thomas Hines critically analyzes the concepts of modernism and regionalism and begins his exploration by contrasting the turn-of-the-century Craftsman work of Charles and Henry Greene with the rationalist modernism of their contemporary Irving Gill and the expressionist modernism of Frank Lloyd Wright and his son Lloyd Wright. The book re-interprets the modernist variations of Wright's disciple Rudolph Schindler and the International Style of his contemporary Richard Neutra, as well as of their followers: Gregory Ain, Raphael Soriano, and Harwell Harris. The minimalist Case Study House program is contrasted with the sensuous modernism of John Lautner and with the large-scale modernism of William Pereira and Welton Becket. Hines ends the book in the early 1970s, as modernism began to confront the challenge of the post-modernist critique. A personal epilogue reflects on the author's exploration of Los Angeles modernism from the late 1960s to 2009.

Phillips Ted Ashton Jr., Brown Thomas J. (EDT), Humphreys Josephine (FRW), Phillips Alice Mcpherson (AFT) Title : City of the Silent
Author: Phillips Ted Ashton Jr., Brown Thomas J. (EDT), Humphreys Josephine (FRW), Phillips Alice Mcpherson (AFT)
Publisher: Univ of South Carolina Pr

If you've ever walked through a cemetery, you've certainly stood in front of a tombstone, wondering about the life of the person buried there. In this book, historian Philips answers that question for 200 people whose final resting place is Charleston, South Carolina's Magnolia Cemetery. Ranging from secessionists to carpetbaggers, politicians to ornithologists, and suffragists to bookstore owners, the author presents a cast of the city's most colorful characters since the mid-19th century. Maps make it possible for readers to use the book as a guide to the cemetery, and the author suggests several thematic tours. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Hine Thomas Title : The Great Funk
Author: Hine Thomas
Publisher: Farrar Straus & Giroux

Avocado kitchens! Shag rugs! Dacron leisure suits! Earth shoes!

At long last, the author of the beloved celebration of 1950s and '60s design Populuxe turns his sights on that most confusing and confused decade of all: the 1970s.

The '70s were tough, man. The president resigned; we lost a war; there were gas lines, urban squalor, bizarre crimes, and soaring inflation. The country fell into a great funk. But when things fall apart, you can take the fragments and make something fresh. Plaid maxi-dresses and macramé may have been ugly, but they signaled new modes of seeing and being. The 1970s were all about reinvention.

In The Great Funk, Thomas Hine scrutinizes the looks and life of this complex era, climbing into the heads (and platform shoes!) of those who experienced the '70s—exploring the design of our homes and our fashions and scanning the ads that set our desires on fire.

The Great Funk is more than a lavish catalog of 1970s culture and design: it's a brilliantly original, wonderfully lively look at the “Me Decade” through the eyes of the man House & Garden has called “America's sharpest design critic.”

Hines Thomas S., Harris Neil (INT) Title : Burnham of Chicago
Author: Hines Thomas S., Harris Neil (INT)
Publisher: Univ of Chicago Pr

2009 marks the centennial of the influential Plan of Chicago. Designed by Daniel H. Burnham, coauthored by Edward Bennett and produced in collaboration with the Commercial Club of Chicago, the forward-thinking plan proposed many of the city's most distinctive features, including its lakefront parks and roadways, the Magnificent Mile, and Navy Pier. As a result, by the time he died in 1912, Burnham was one of the most famous architects in America as well as an internationally renowned city planner. Thomas S. Hines's book is at once both a biography of Burnham and a vivid portrait of the birth and growth of an American city. In commemoration of the historic anniversary of Burnham's Plan, this edition of Burnham of Chicago includes a new introduction by American history scholar, Neil Harris.

“Indeed, the book as a whole is a model of the balanced portrait, sure of Burnham's importance but always conscious of his failings.”—Paul Goldberger, New York Times Book Review

“In every sense this is the definitive biography.”—Harry Weese, Chicago Tribune

“Professor Hines has written what may prove to be an epoch-making book in the study of American civilization.”—Reyner Banham, Times Literary Supplement

Weintraub Alan (PHT), Hess Alan, Frampton Kenneth (CON), Hines Thomas S. (CON), Pfeiffer Bruce Brooks (CON) Title : Frank Lloyd Wright
Author: Weintraub Alan (PHT), Hess Alan, Frampton Kenneth (CON), Hines Thomas S. (CON), Pfeiffer Bruce Brooks (CON)
Publisher: Rizzoli Intl Pubns

Frank Lloyd Wright is not only synonymous with architecture, his name is also synonymous with the American house in the twentieth century. In particular, his residential work has been the subject of continuing interest and controversy. Wright's Fallingwater (1935), the seminal masterpiece perched over a waterfall deep in the Pennsylvania highlands, is perhaps the best-known private house in the history of the world. In fact, Wright's houses-from his Prairie style Robie House (1906) in Chicago, to the Storer (1923) and Freeman (1923) houses in Los Angeles, and Taliesen West (1937) in the Arizona desert-are all touchstones of modern architecture. For the first time, all 289 extant houses are shown here in exquisite color photographs. Along with Weintraub's stunning photos and a selection of floor plans and archival images, the book includes text and essays by several leading Wright scholars. Frank Lloyd Wright: The Houses is an event of great importance and a major contribution to the literature on this titan of modern architecture.

Hine Thomas Title : Lo voglio. Perché siamo diventati schiavi dello shopping
Author: Hine Thomas
Publisher: Orme Editori

Hine Thomas Title : I Want That
Author: Hine Thomas
Publisher: Perennial

Shopping has a lot in common with sex.
Just about everybody does it.
Some people brag about how well they do it.
Some keep it a secret.
And both provide ample opportunities
to make foolish choices.

Choosing and using objects is a primal human activity, and I Want That! is nothing less than a portrait of humanity as the species that shops. It explores the history of acquisition -- finding, choosing, spending -- from our amber-coveting Neolithic forebears to Renaissance nobles who outfitted themselves for power to twenty-first-century bargain hunters looking for a good buy on eBay. I Want That! explores the minds of shoppers in the quest to nourish and feed fantasies, to define individuality, to provide for family, and to satisfy the needs for celebration, power, and choice -- all of which lead us to malls, boutiques, websites, and superstores.

Hine Thomas Title : The Rise and Fall of the American Teenager
Author: Hine Thomas
Publisher: Perennial

In the groundbreaking work, Thomas Hine examines the American teenager as a social invention shaped by the needs of the twentieth century. With intelligence, insight, imagination, and humorm he traces the culture of youth in America-from the spiritual trials of young Puritans and the vision quests of Native Americans to the media-blitzed consumerism of contempory thirteen-to-nineteen -year-olds. The resulting study is a glorious appreciation of youth that challenges us to confront our sterotypesm, rethink our expectations, and consider anew the lives of those individuals who are blessing, our bane, and our future.
