![]() ![]() Author: Moskalew Walter, Moskalewa-Richter Anna, Von Reincke Dagmar, Phillips Anthony (TRN), Ashkenazy Vladimir (FRW) Publisher: Toccata Pr For well over half a century, since the Soviet regime first allowed Sviatoslav Richter to travel to the west, his name has been synonymous with the very pinnacle of pianistic art. His recorded legacy, extending from 1947 to 1994 is one of the largest and most admired ever assembled by any musician anywhere. Yet this prodigiously gifted artist underwent no formal musical studies of any kind until at the age of 22 when he left the relative obscurity of the Ukraine to seek the advice of Russia's most celebrated piano pedagogue, Heinrich Neuhaus, in Moscow. Neuhaus' astonished reaction to his first encounter with Richter, and his declaration that 'to teach one who already knows will only do damage', have passed into legend. Richter, a famously reclusive man outside a small circle of trusted companions, resisted speaking or writing about himself. As a result, comparatively little is known about his life before his move to Moscow. This lavishly illustrated book provides unique insights into the childhood and formative years of 'Svetik' - 'Little Light', as he was always known within the large and unusually creative family circle - in a provincial Ukrainian city during the traumatic years of revolution, civil war, famine and wartime occupation by German and Romanian forces. Walter Moskalew, Richter's much younger cousin, is guardian of a rich collection of photographs, reminiscences, drawings and letters of family members, notably the memoirs of Richter's mother Anna and his twenty-year-long correspondence with his beloved Aunt Meri. Walter Moskalew has collaborated with editor and translator Anthony Phillips to produce an indispensable account of the influences that shaped the artistry and world-view of the phenomenon that was Sviatoslav Richter. € 37,00

![]() ![]() Author: Garvey Marcus, Hill Robert A. (EDT), Dixon John (EDT), Rodriguez Mariela Haro (EDT), Yuen Anthony (EDT) Publisher: Duke Univ Pr Volume XII of the Marcus Garvey and Universal Negro Improvement Association Papers covers a period of twelve months, from the opening of the UNIA's historic first international convention in New York, in August 1920, to Marcus Garvey's return to the United States. in July 1921 after an extended tour of Cuba, Jamaica, Panama, Costa Rica, and Belize. In many ways the 1920 convention marked the high-point of the Garvey movement in the United States, while Garvey's tour of the Caribbean, in the winter and spring of 1921, registered the greatest outpouring of popular support for the UNIA in its history. The period covered in the present volume was the moment of the movement's political apotheosis, as well as the moment when the finances of Garvey's Black Star Line went into free fall. Volume XII highlights the centrality of the Caribbean people not only to the convention, but also to the movement. The reports to the convention discussed the range of social and economic conditions obtaining in the Caribbean, particularly their impact on racial conditions. The quality of the discussions and debates were impressive. Contained in these reports are some of the earliest and most clearly enunciated statements in defense of social and political freedom in the Caribbean. These documents form an underappreciated and still underutilized record of the political awakening of Caribbean people of African descent. € 113,50

![]() ![]() Author: Wills Anthony, Phillips Tim Publisher: English Heritage The seaside pier is perhaps the most iconic symbol of the British holiday resort and for many of us it is the epitome of excursions to the seaside. No two piers are the same, ranging as they do from the clear uncluttered deck to elaborately structured pavilions, from amusement arcades to the landing stages and theatres that were the highlight of pier life in the early part of the last century. Founded in 1979 under Sir John Betjeman, the National Piers Society serves to celebrate the pier, raise it in our consciousness and educate us on preservation, conservation and the economic benefits for seaside towns of a functioning pier.Published to mark the bicentenary of the opening of the first public pier in 1814, at Ryde on the Isle of Wight, this book with contributions from experts within English Heritage and the NPS tells the fascinating story of the Victorian origins of piers, discusses the engineering and architectural challenges imposed by varying climatic and tidal conditions, and the instrumental role of the railways in stimulating pier construction. The core of the book is a complete gazetteer of all piers which the public can visit around the coast of Britain with details of their location, history and current operations, and a variety of historical and contemporary illustrations.Whether your summer invariably includes visits to the coast or you enjoy the vicarious pleasure of the seaside from a winter armchair, this book is an essential companion for all who admire and value Britain’s rich seaside heritage. € 29,40

![]() ![]() Author: Shchedrin Rodion, Phillips Anthony (TRN) Publisher: Schott & Co Ltd (Schott). Rodion Shchedrin is internationally recognized as the pre-eminent contemporary composer of the Russian modern school. His autobiography looks back over an eventful life and provides a variety of stimulating insights behind the facade of the international music scene. Along the way Shchedrin elaborates highly personal views on the political situation and many other aspects of life in the former Soviet Union, turning an unsparing eye on the machinery of ideological repression exerted on artists as they struggled to interpret and conform to the constantly mutating diktats of the regime. A wealth of anecdotes and humorous observations offer the reader glimpses of the author's essentially sanguine and life-enhancing disposition. Rodion Shchedrin was born in Moscow in 1932. He studied composition and piano at the Moscow Conservatoire and quickly made his way to international recognition in both disciplines. His ballets, symphonic works, piano concertos and chamber music compositions are regularly performed in the leading theatres and concert halls of the world. Rodion Shchedrin and his wife, the prima ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, today make their homes in Moscow and Munich, shuttling between the two although, as Shchedrin prepares to enter his ninth decade of life, his ceaseless travels around the globe show no sign of diminishing. English translation by Anthony Phillips. € 21,40
