![]() ![]() Author: Ferguson Gary Publisher: Counterpoint The nature writing of Gary Ferguson arises out of intimate experience. He trekked 500 miles through Yellowstone to write Walking Down the Wild and spent a season in the field at a wilderness therapy program for Shouting at the Sky. He journeyed 250 miles on foot for Hawks Rest and followed through the seasons the first fourteen wolves released into Yellowstone National Park for The Yellowstone Wolves. But nothing could prepare him for the experience he details in his new book. The Carry Home is both a moving celebration of the outdoor life shared between Ferguson and his wife Jane, who died tragically in a canoeing accident in northern Ontario in 2005, and a chronicle of the mending, uplifting power of nature. Confronting his unthinkable loss, Ferguson set out to fulfill Jane’s final wish: the scattering of her ashes in five remote, wild locations they loved and shared. The act of the carry home allows Ferguson the opportunity to ruminate on their life together as well as explore deeply the impactful presence of nature in all of our lives. Theirs was a love borne of wild places, and The Carry Home offers a powerful glimpse into how the natural world can be a critical prompt for moving through cycles of immeasurable grief, how bereavement can turn to wonder, and how one man rediscovered himself in the process of saying goodbye. € 22,60

![]() ![]() Author: Ferguson Gary Publisher: Ashgate Pub Co Since the term 'homosexual' did not exist in classical or medieval European languages, some have assumed that there were none and that all same-sex encounters were governed by circumstances. This would include situations in which there were no other partners available or, as in Greece and Rome, that the use of boys by more powerful men was another manifestation of a patriarchal society. Recently the subject has been looked at more closely, with the result that 'queering' history has allowed more nuanced readings of sources to show a broad spectrum of orientation. Ferguson (French, University of Delaware) examines some of the literature of the French Renaissance using the more fluid definitions of gender. While most of his examples are of male same-sex relationships, he also discusses lesbian and transgendered behavior. Ferguson explores the representations of same-sex attachment and how it is viewed by different segments of society, particularly the nobility and the Church. An interesting side note is that homosexual behavior is not as roundly condemned as cross dressing. The abdication of one's birth gender is most unsettling and least tolerated to this day. Ferguson's study furthers the understanding of the history behind our modern attitudes. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) € 112,10

![]() ![]() Author: Ferguson Gary Publisher: Random House Inc ?Wildness is something best measured in the dark. On black, moonless nights when the horizon goes limp, and every scratch and thud and snap of branch outside the tent touches off spot fires in your brain. Sort of like now. The sow grizzly is back again, circling, gulping down the dark and blowing it out again through her nose.? So begins Gary Ferguson?s tale of his three-month odyssey at Hawks Rest in the heart of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Beginning with a hundred-mile hike to reach Hawks Rest, Ferguson recounts his adventures observing grizzly bears, tracking wolf packs, and encountering other wildlife in what is now the largest intact ecosystem in the temperate world. Along the way he meets an intriguing array of backcountry hikers, park rangers, elk hunters, outfitters, and wildlife biologists all grappling with the challenges of preserving this magnificent slice of wilderness. Personal, poignant, and often gripping, Hawks Rest celebrates ?this profusion of things fierce and vast and thrilling? as it chronicles the stresses that threaten America?s most beloved wilderness lands. € 12,60
