Note on Text and Translation: The Latin text of Guarino's overtly polemical letter to Brother Giovanni of Prato, a perfect embodiment of the intellectual, pedagogical and ethical goals pursued by the fathers of Italian Humanism, mirrors that to be found in Guarino Veronese, 'Epistolario', ed. by Remigio Sabbadini, 3 vol., Venice, A spese della società, 1915-1919, II, pp. 519-32. Minor alterations have been made to the punctuation and in the use of capital letters and italics. Guarino's fine humanistic Latin, based on Cicero, is not universally transparent. The purpose of the English translation here provided - which has benefitted from the consultation of an Italian version published in 'Il pensiero pedagogico dello Umanesimo', ed. by Eugenio Garin, Florence, Giuntine / Sansoni, 1958, pp. 395-417 - is to offer a readable text, resolving the more challenging passages 'ad sensum' through a proper contextualisation. The present pamphelt is published on the occasion of the international conference 'La pedagogia italiana nel secolo dell'Umanesimo', promoted by the Centro Studi 'Mario Pancrazi' in collaboration with the Accademia Petrarca di Lettere Arti e Scienze, Arezzo - Sansepolcro - Città di Castello, 29-31 October 2024. Sotto il titolo di Invito alla lettura della poesia italiana si raccoglie qui una dozzina di interventi, per la maggior parte realizzati nel corso di questi anni Venti. Il nucleo del volume è costituito da saggi riguardanti Dante e Petrarca, i più geniali poeti a uscire dall'Italia, indagati soprattutto dall'ottica dei rapporti con Omero, Virgilio e l'antichità classica. A essi si affiancano studi sulla fortuna dei maestri dell'epos cavalleresco, Ariosto e Tasso, e su quella dei principali lirici dell'Otto-Novecento: Giosuè Carducci ed Eugenio Montale. Non manca neppure un'escursione leonardesca.

Il libro costituisce un contributo essenziale alla storia della letteratura dell'Umbria, a partire dalla stagione umanistica, fino al primo Ottocento: una storia che ha tra i suoi tratti specifici la vitalità con cui scrittori provenienti spesso da ambiti marginali e periferici hanno saputo confrontarsi con un ampio orizzonte nazionale e internazionale. E anche nel trattare di scrittori e intellettuali 'minori', nel toccare situazioni marginali, lo studioso ha sempre di mira questi intrecci, i passaggi molteplici (in vari casi anche internazionali) in cui si svolge e matura l'esperienza della scrittura: nel particolare sa riconoscere il segno della storia, la misura e la postura di un essere che dall'Umbria e attraverso l'Umbria si apre all'Europa, in una dimensione europea e civile che trova ragione e senso proprio nella concretezza delle realtà regionali e locali, nella loro universalità.

Meglio noto per il poema cavalleresco L'inamoramento de Orlando e per il canzoniere petrarchesco Amorum libri tres, Matteo Maria Boiardo fu anche autore dei Pastoralia (1463-1464), una silloge di dieci egloghe latine. Qui si propone uno studio complessivo dell'opera nel suo duplice aspetto encomiastico e amoroso. All'analisi retorico-strutturale di passi scelti, con relative annotazioni filologiche, si affianca un'indagine intertestuale tesa a evidenziare le fonti antiche - soprattutto virgiliane - e rinascimentali (in particolare, Tito Vespasiano Strozzi).
