Protagonista dei tre romanzi che compongono la trilogia burgessiana è Victor Crabbe, funzionario del ministero dell'istruzione inglese, che in Malaysia insegna storia nei college in cui si va formando quella che sarà la classe dirigente del nuovo stato indipendente. Con lui c'è la moglie, che rifiuta, quasi fosse in esilio, la vita nell'ex colonia britannica. A poco a poco però si lascia affascinare dal Paese e il fatto la avvicina al marito, anche se a separarli è qualcosa di interiore che attiene alla loro storia di europei alla ricerca di se stessi.

La storia di Alex, della violenza che si porta dentro e di quella del mondo cinico e ottuso che pensa di poterlo curare. Un grande classico contemporaneo, terrificante e meraviglioso. «Per molti versi il libro sono io: perché quello che scriviamo riguarda molto quello che siamo. E il libro rivela una battaglia interiore con questa idea: quella del male. Non solo il male, ma il pericolo di provare a correggerlo.
