La condizione di straniero è destinata a diffondersi. Ma la mobilità che ci piace celebrare si scontra con le frontiere che gli Stati nazione erigono contro i 'migranti', trattati più come nemici che come ospiti. Spinti a compensare l'ostilità dei loro governi, molti cittadini si sono trovati costretti a fare qualcosa: accogliere, sfamare o trasportare viaggiatori in difficoltà. Hanno così ridestato un'antica tradizione antropologica che sembrava sopita: l'ospitalità. Questo modo di entrare in politica aprendo la porta di casa rivela però i suoi limiti. Ogni sistemazione è una goccia d'acqua nell'oceano del peregrinare globale e la benevolenza alla base di questi gesti non può fungere da salvacondotto permanente. In un momento in cui la città si sfalda e scompare in vaste e sconfinate conurbazioni, lo sguardo antropologico si rivela più che mai necessario per ritrovare, senza pregiudizi né modelli precostituiti, le origini e i processi che creano lo spazio condiviso della città. Come ripensare le forme pubbliche di ospitalità e affrontare la questione della cittadinanza, nel divenire straniero di ciascuno di noi?

Da aprile 2015 a ottobre 2016, sono stati circa diecimila i migranti che hanno vissuto in condizioni estremamente precarie nella 'Giungla' di Calais, accendendo passioni, polemiche e timori, ma anche grandi solidarietà. Fifty million people in the world today are victims of forced relocation caused by wars and violence. Whole new countries are being created, occupied by Afghan refugees, displaced Columbians, deported Rwandans, exiled Congolese, fleeing Iraqis, Chechens, Somalians and Sudanese who have witnessed wars, massacres, aggression and terror.

New populations appear, defined by their shared conditions of fear and victimhood and by their need to survive outside of their homelands. Their lives are marked by the daily trudge of dislocation, refugee camps, humanitarian help and the never-ending wait. These populations are the emblems of a new human condition which takes shape on the very margins of the world.

In this remarkable book Michel Agier sheds light on this process of dislocation and quarantine which is affecting an ever-growing proportion of the world's population.
