The Pop Art phenomenon has been a subject of discussion for art critics, gallerists, collectors and the artists themselves, since its first appearance in the '50s. However, since the '80s there has been a strong interest in retrospectively studying the current, trying not only to define its spread in geographical and chronological terms, but also to identify which artists and single pieces of artwork can be labeled as 'Pop'. Despite the efforts made in describing the current, previous research has trivialized it, so much so that the term Pop has been misattributed, and its features are not precise. Within this framework, this book aims to investigate the artistic fortunes of Pop Art in Italy, trying to understand whether what happened in Italy could be identified as such, especially focusing on the period between 1962 and 1964, and the period immediately after.

La città di Leonia raccontata da Calvino misura la sua opulenza dalle cose che vengono buttate via per far posto alle nuove e finisce per ritrovarsi circondata da montagne di rifiuti che rischiano di travolgerla. L'incubo dei rifiuti che invadono le strade in molte città è oramai un dato di fatto. Expo 2015 ha rappresentato un momento importante di riflessione su molti aspetti legati al futuro non proprio roseo del nostro pianeta e sulle possibilità offerte dalle energie sostenibili. Anche gli artisti, dagli anni Settanta, hanno avvertito nelle loro opere l'urgenza di porre in primo piano il problema ecologico. Tra tutti Beuys nel progetto "Difesa della Natura", basato sulla piantumazione di querce, concretizzò il tema della tutela dell'ambiente naturale in un'azione collettiva volta a sensibilizzare la comunità. La sua arte ha lasciato un segno indelebile sulle generazioni successive e ha dimostrato come l'artisticità possa anche diventare radicalmente concreta. Il gesto di Beuys ha rappresentato un precedente imprescindibile per quegli artisti che, sensibili ai temi dell'ecologia e dell'ecosostenibilità, sono stati raccolti nella mostra Creative Energy. Arte per il rinnovabile.
