Hansen James, Sato Makiko Title : Storms of My Grandchildren
Author: Hansen James, Sato Makiko
Publisher: Bloomsbury Pub Plc USA

An urgent and provocative call to action from the world's leading climate scientist—speaking out here for the first time with the full story of what we need to know about humanity's last chance to get off the path to a catastrophic global meltdown, and why we don't know the half of it.

In Storms of My Grandchildren, Dr. James Hansen—the nation's leading scientist on climate issues—speaks out for the first time with the full truth about global warming: The planet is hurtling even more rapidly than previously acknowledged to a climatic point of no return. Although the threat of human-caused climate change is now widely recognized, politicians have failed to connect policy with the science, responding instead with ineffectual remedies dictated by special interests. Hansen shows why President Obama's solution, cap-and-trade, which Al Gore has signed on to, won't work; why we must phase out all coal, and why 350 ppm of carbon dioxide is a goal we must achieve if our children and grandchildren are to avoid global meltdown and the storms of the book's title. This urgent manifesto bucks conventional wisdom (including the Kyoto Protocol) and is sure to stir controversy, but Hansen—whose climate predictions have come to pass again and again, beginning in the 1980s when he first warned Congress about global warming—is the single most credible voice on the subject worldwide.

Hansen paints a devastating but all-too-realistic picture of what will happen in the near future, mere years and decades from now, if we follow the course we're on. But he is also an optimist, showing that there is still time to do what we need to save the planet. Urgent, strong action is needed, and this book, released to coincide with the Copenhagen Conference in December 2009, will be key in setting the agenda going forward to create a groundswell, a tipping point, to save humanity—and our grandchildren—from a dire fate more imminent than we had supposed.

Mann I. (EDT), Nakamura Akiko (EDT) Title : Small Bodies in Planetary Systems
Author: Mann I. (EDT), Nakamura Akiko (EDT)
Publisher: Springer Verlag

The small bodies in planetary systems are indicative of the material evolution, the dynamical evolution and the presence of planets in a system. Recent astronomical research, space research, laboratory research and numerical simulations have brought a wealth of new and exciting findings on extra-solar planetary systems and on asteroids, comets, meteoroids and trans-Neptunian objects in our solar system. Progress in astronomical instrumentation has led to the discovery and investigation of small bodies in the outer solar system and to observations of debris disks related to the small bodies in extra-solar planetary systems. Space research allowed for close studies of some of the small solar system bodies from spacecraft. This class-tested lecture set is intended as an introduction to the latest research results and to the key issues of future research.

Author: Gerstle C. Andrew, Clark Timothy, Yano Akiko
Publisher: Univ of Hawaii Pr

Gerstle (Japanese studies, U. of London) asserts that hero worship and obsession with celebrities is not a modern phenomenon, and that in 18th and 19th century Osaka, Kabuki actors were celebrities: adored, obsessed over, celebrated by their own fan clubs. Kabuki culture included art and poetry as well as theater, and images of Kabuki heroes were captured in color woodblock prints and books. This volume features essays on Kabuki culture, a catalog of these stunning color prints, and text describing the prints' content and context. Indexed by artists, plays, and roles. Makiko Kuwuhara Title : Tattoo
Author: Makiko Kuwuhara
Publisher: BERG PUBLISHERS

Kuwahara (anthropology, U. of London) examines the significance of tattooing in contemporary French Polynesian society. Unlike previous studies that have focused on tradition and ethnic identity, this scholarly volume addresses the discontinuity of the Tahitian tattooing tradition (which was suppressed in the 1830s and revived in the 1980s), as well as the spatiality of tattooing. After providing a history of Tahitian tattooing and an introduction to the practice and form of tattooing, the book looks at tattooing in terms of social relationships, ownership & transmission, festivals, identities, and the practice inside a prison. Nguyen Andre, Moriyama Yukiko Title : Vietnamese Home Cooking for Everyone
Author: Nguyen Andre, Moriyama Yukiko
Publisher: Japan Pubn Trading Co

INTRODUCTION
Vietnam is a country of natural beauty with a coastline of sandy beaches stretching about 2000 miles (3225 km) from the northern to the southern tip of the South China Sea. Along the coast, fishing is the main livelihood. The majority of Vietnamese people are Kinh race people (87%) with the remaining of 53 different ethnic minority groups. For more than 2000 years, the country has been subjected to a near continuing series of foreign occupations from China, France, Japan, and America. One consequence of these occupations is the lasting influence on Vietnamese cuisine. Among Vietnamese dishes, perhaps the best known in the West is Pho, a noodle soup. Another is the deep-fried spring roll called Nern in the north, and Cha Goi in the south. Rice is a staple food used as a side dish, or a main dish when combined with other ingredients, such as beef, pork, chicken, or seafood. Vietnamese dishes consist of many different blends of herbs and spices. Most dishes are not fiery hot, nor greasy. Seafood and vegetarian dishes like An Chay are very popular. Today, Vietnamese cuisine is gaining increased international attention due to the fact that it is quite healthy.

This book is an introduction to a new generation for a delicious journey through Vietnamese cuisine. While the combination of flavors may seem experimental to some, they will result in a savory experience. All ingredients used in these recipes can be found in supermarkets, natural food stores or in Asian food markets. It is our pleasure to share these quick and delicious Vietnamese recipes with you. Enjoy the good nutrition that comes with it.

Yosano Akiko, Fogel Joshua A. (TRN), Fogel Joshua A. Title : Travels in Manchuria and Mongolia
Author: Yosano Akiko, Fogel Joshua A. (TRN), Fogel Joshua A.
Publisher: Columbia Univ Pr

Yosano Akiko (1878-1942) was one of Japan's greatest poets and translators from classical Japanese. Her output was extraordinary, including twenty volumes of poetry and the most popular translation of the ancient classic The Tale of Genji into modern Japanese. The mother of eleven children, she was a prominent feminist and frequent contributor to Japan's first feminist journal of creative writing, Seito (Blue stocking).

In 1928 at a highpoint of Sino-Japanese tensions, Yosano was invited by the South Manchurian Railway Company to travel around areas with a prominent Japanese presence in China's northeast. This volume, translated for the first time into English, is her account of that journey. Though a portrait of China and the Chinese, the chronicle is most revealing as a portrait of modern Japanese representations of China -- and as a study of Yosano herself.

Halley Peter, Fuchs Rudi, Goodeve Thyrza Nichols, Matake Makiko, Kandel Susan, Paparoni. Demetrio, Rimanelli David, Reynolds Cory (EDT) Title : Peter Halley
Author: Halley Peter, Fuchs Rudi, Goodeve Thyrza Nichols, Matake Makiko, Kandel Susan, Paparoni. Demetrio, Rimanelli David, Reynolds Cory (EDT)
Publisher: Distributed Art Pub Inc

Painter, writer, teacher, and publisher: Peter Halley has been a widely influential figure in the international art world since his bold canvases were first shown in the early 1980s. Emerging from the East Village Neo-Geo scene, Halley soon became known for his aggressively colored Day-Glo paintings of square 'cells' and rectilinear 'conduits,' titled with references ranging from the erudite to the pop.
While his paintings may initially recall the abstractions of Newman, Mondrian, and Albers, Halley's work breaks with the modernist agenda by insisting on a figurative referent, and, as curator and critic Dan Cameron has noted, Halley 'effectively restate[s] the terms of abstraction in our time.' For Halley, geometry is a profoundly social fact and his paintings are diagrams of the experience of space and time in contemporary society, depictions of loneliness and of connection.
