Carey Roane (EDT), Chomsky Noam (INT) Title : The New Intifada
Author: Carey Roane (EDT), Chomsky Noam (INT)
Publisher: Verso Books

Frustrated by the failure of the peace process to end the Israeli occupation, and outraged by Ariel Sharon's invasion, with one thousand armed guards, of the Al-Aqsa holy site in East Jerusalem, the Palestinian population of Israel and the Occupied Territories rose up in September 2000. A new intifada has raged ever since.

In these pages, a group of writers and analysts, many of them directly involved in the conflict, trace the origins of the uprising, its consequences for the Palestinian people and the Israeli state, and its likely impact on the future of peace in the Middle East. They discuss the role of the United States in the conflict, pick apart the fraudulence of the Oslo accords, examine the brutal response of the Barak and Sharon governments, and critically appraise the strategy of the Palestinian leadership. In addition, several contributors provide eloquent first-hand reports from the front-line of the intifada—from the streets of Jerusalem and Gaza, to refugee camps in Lebanon and schools on the West Bank. Photographs provide searing testimony to the heroism and costs of the resistance. Maps illustrate the stranglehold Israel continues to exert over the Palestinian territories. The case for an international grassroots movement in support of Palestinian rights is made with urgency and persuasive clarity.

Chomsky Noam Title : Egemonia americana e «Stati fuorilegge»
Author: Chomsky Noam
Publisher: edizioni Dedalo

Noam Chomsky Title : 9-11
Author: Noam Chomsky
Publisher: Turnaround publisher services

In 9-11, Noam Chomsky comments on the September 11th attacks, the new war on terrorism, Osama bin Laden, U.S. involvement with Afghanistan, media control, and the long-term implications of America's military attacks abroad. Informed by his deep understanding of the gravity of these issues and the global stakes, 9-11 demonstrates Chomsky's impeccable knowledge of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East and South Asia, and sheds light on the rapidly shifting balance of world power. Speaking out against escalating violence, Chomsky critically examines the United States' own foreign policy record and considers what international institutions might be employed against underground networks and national states accused of terrorism. 9-11's analysis still stands as a measure of how well the media is able to serve its role of informing the citizenry, so crucial to our democracy in times of war.

An Excerpt from Rogue States by Noam Chomsky

The concept of 'rogue state' plays a pre-eminent role today in policy planning and analysis.

The current Iraq crisis is only the latest example. Washington and London declared Iraq a 'rogue state,' a threat to its neighbors and to the entire world, an 'outlaw nation' led by a reincarnation of Hitler who must be contained by the guardians of world order, the United States and its British 'junior partner,' to adopt the term ruefully employed by the British foreign office half a century ago. The concept merits a close look.

[...]

A secret 1995 study of the Strategic Command, which is responsible for the strategic nuclear arsenal, outlines the basic thinking. Released through the Freedom of Information Act, the study, Essentials of Post-Cold War Deterrence, 'shows how the United States shifted its deterrent strategy from the defunct Soviet Union to so-called rogue states such as Iraq, Libya, Cuba and North Korea,' AP reports. The study advocates that the US exploit its nuclear arsenal to portray itself as 'irrational and vindictive if its vital interests are attacked.' That 'should be a part of the national persona we project to all adversaries,' in particular the 'rogue states.' 'It hurts to portray ourselves as too fully rational and cool-headed,' let alone committed to such silliness as international law and treaty obligations. 'The fact that some elements' of the US government 'may appear to be potentially 'out of control' can be beneficial to creating and reinforcing fears and doubts within the minds of an adversary's decision makers.' The report resurrects Nixon's 'madman theory': our enemies should recognize that we are crazed and unpredictable, with extraordin

Chomsky Noam, Macedo Donaldo P. Title : Chomsky on Miseducation
Author: Chomsky Noam, Macedo Donaldo P.
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield Pub Inc

Noam Chomsky's prolific writings have made him the most cited educators in history—the only living writer on a most-cited list that includes Plato, Shakespeare, and Freud. Yet until now no book has systematically offered Chomsky's influential writings on education. In this book Noam Chomsky encourages a larger understanding of our educational needs, starting with the changing role of schools today, and broadening our view of new models of public education. A truly democratic society, he argues, cannot thrive in a rapidly changing world unless our approach to education—formal and otherwise—is dramatically reformed. Chomsky's critique of how our current educational system “miseducates” students—and his prescriptions for change—are essential reading for teachers, parents, school administrators, activists, and anyone concerned about the future.

Chomsky Noam Title : New Horizons in the Study of Language and Mind
Author: Chomsky Noam
Publisher: Cambridge Univ Pr

This book is an outstanding contribution to the philosophical study of language and mind, by one of the most influential thinkers of our time. In a series of penetrating essays, Chomsky cuts through the confusion and prejudice that has infected the study of language and mind, bringing new solutions to traditional philosophical puzzles and fresh perspectives on issues of general interest, ranging from the mind-body problem to the unification of science. Using a range of imaginative and deceptively simple linguistic analyses, Chomsky defends the view that knowledge of language is internal to the human mind. He argues that a proper study of language must deal with this mental construct. According to Chomsky, therefore, human language is a 'biological object' and should be analyzed using the methodology of the sciences. His examples and analyses come together in this book to give a unique and compelling perspective on language and the mind.

Two of Chomsky's most famous and accessible works, back in print in one affordable, attractive volume. Restoring to print two of Chomsky's most famous and popular books in one omnibus volume, On Language features some of the noted linguist and political critic's most informal and highly accessible work, making it an ideal introduction to his thought. In Part I ('Language and Responsibility') Chomsky presents a fascinating self-portrait of his political, moral, and linguistic thinking. In Part II ('Reflections on Language') Chomsky explores the more general implications of the study of language and offers incisive analyses of the controversies among psychologists, philosophers, and linguists over fundamental questions of language.

Chomsky Noam Title : Profit over People
Author: Chomsky Noam
Publisher: Seven Stories Pr

Why is the Atlantic slowly filling with crude petroleum, threatening a millions-of-years-old ecological balance? Why did traders at prominent banks take high-risk gambles with the money entrusted to them by hundreds of thousands of clients around the world, expanding and leveraging their investments to the point that failure led to a global financial crisis that left millions of people jobless and hundreds of cities economically devastated? Why would the world's most powerful military spend ten years fighting an enemy that presents no direct threat to secure resources for corporations?
The culprit in all cases is neoliberal ideology—the belief in the supremacy of 'free' markets to drive and govern human affairs. And in the years since the initial publication of Noam Chomsky's Profit Over People: Neoliberalism and Global Order, the bitter vines of neoliberalism have only twisted themselves further into the world economy, obliterating the public's voice in public affairs and substituting the bottom line in place of people's basic obligation to care for one another as ends in themselves. In Profit Over People, Chomsky reveals the roots of the present crisis, tracing the history of neoliberalism through an incisive analysis of free trade agreements of the 1990s, the World Trade Organization, and the International Monetary Fund—and describes the movements of resistance to the increasing interference by the private sector in global affairs.
In the years since the initial publication of Profit Over People, the stakes have only risen. Now more than ever, Profit Over People is one of the key texts explaining how the crisis facing us operates—and how, through Chomsky's analysis of resistance, we may find an escape from the closing net.

Chomsky Noam; Moro A. (cur.) Title : Linguaggio e problemi della conoscenza
Author: Chomsky Noam; Moro A. (cur.)
Publisher: Il Mulino

Chomsky Noam Title : The Minimalist Program
Author: Chomsky Noam
Publisher: Mit Pr

The Minimalist Program consists of four recent essays that attempt to situate linguistic theory in the broader cognitive sciences. In these essays the minimalist approach to linguistic theory is formulated and progressively developed. Building on the theory of principles and parameters and, in particular, on principles of economy of derivation and representation, the minimalist framework takes Universal Grammar as providing a unique computational system, with derivations driven by morphological properties, to which the syntactic variation of languages is also restricted.

Within this theoretical framework, linguistic expressions are generated by optimally efficient derivations that must satisfy the conditions that hold on interface levels, the only levels of linguistic representation. The interface levels provide instructions to two types of performance systems, articulatory-perceptual and conceptual- intentional. All syntactic conditions, then, express properties of these interface levels, reflecting the interpretive requirements of language and keeping to very restricted conceptual resources.

Chomsky Noam Title : Language and Thought
Author: Chomsky Noam
Publisher: Midpoint Trade Books Inc

As a linguist, Noam Chomsky aims not only at making a technical contribution with his generative theory of language but also at integrating his linguistic theory into a wider view of the relationship between language and the human mind. The crux of this view is his hypothesis that human beings are born with an innate knowledge of universal principles underlying the structure of human language.
Chomsky's ideas have exerted a powerful influence on other disciplines by restoring language to a central position in cognitive psychology and in the philosophy of mind. The wider impact of his redefinition of the subject gives him a permanent place in the intellectual history of the twentieth century.
Central to Chomsky's analysis is the distinction he draws between linguistic competence (knowledge of the system of rules that govern language) and an individual's actual performance as a user of language.
As Dr. Klor de Alva points out, '... Chomsky's sober text makes clear why an avoidance of dogmatism and reductionism, in the human and natural sciences - as in all things - and a well-founded recognition of the limits of cognition are not only methodologically useful but also conceptually necessary.'
