Il Milione di Marco Polo (1254-1324) è uno dei massimi capolavori della letteratura di viaggio. Non solo per il suo valore storico, in quanto primo documento che ha dato all'Occidente l'immagine più vera di un mondo pressoché ignoto, l'Oriente, ma soprattutto per la sua attualità che si rinnova attraverso i secoli. Pur essendo, infatti, trascorsi oltre settecento anni da quando il mercante veneziano, detenuto in una prigione genovese, dettò a Rustichello da Pisa le memorie dei suoi lunghi anni di viaggio attraverso l'Asia, vive e nitide, e straordinariamente precise sono le immagini e le descrizioni che balzano dalle pagine del suo diario. Così, per esempio, insieme a Marco possiamo ripercorrere ancor oggi la leggendaria Via della Seta: l'Armenia, la Persia (cioè l'Iran), l'attuale Afghanistan, il Pamir, il deserto dei Gobi fino al mitico Catai, la moderna Cina. Tradotto in molte lingue nel corso dei secoli, utilizzato in Europa fin dal 1300 per la stesura delle prime carte geografiche, punto di riferimento per studiosi, esploratori, missionari, il Milione non ha mai cessato di affascinare e commuovere. La grandissima fortuna del 'Milione' è testimoniata dalle molteplici redazioni dell'originale e da oltre centotrenta codici che ci hanno tramandato il testo in moltissime lingue. Quella che qui si presenta è la redazione toscana detta dell' 'ottimo' ('ottimo' perché desunta dal più autorevole manoscritto italiano tra le antiche traduzioni toscane), cui si affianca una traduzione in italiano moderno dovuta a Maria Vittoria Malvano.

Fra il 1298 e 1299, nelle carceri di Genova, Marco Polo detta al compagno di prigionia, Rustichello da Pisa, il suo resoconto del viaggio compiuto in Cina nel 1271: 'Le Divisament da Monde'. Scritto nella redazione originale in franco-italiano, il libro sarà ben presto noto con il titolo di Milione, dal soprannome di tutta la stirpe dei Polo, da Emilione, nome di un antenato della famiglia. Marco si occuperà, sino alla morte, di affari e commercio e soprattutto della diffusione del suo libro che, ben presto volgarizzato, circolerà in versioni toscane più o meno fedeli, e riscuoterà fin dai primi del Trecento, un notevole successo.
