Gli anni del dopoguerra sono stati cruciali per la costruzione della città di Milano: una generazione di professionisti, erede del rinnovamento architettonico operato dal Movimento Moderno e al tempo stesso incline ad una certa libertà espressiva, ricostruiva la città bombardata dando vita alle sue visioni urbane, terreni fertili per scambi interdisciplinari e sperimentazioni. L'aspetto culturale era alla base della formazione di questi architetti, in bilico tra interessi per le nuove concezioni strutturali e le suggestioni provenienti dall'ambiente artistico internazionale. Nomi illustri e figure rimaste - talvolta inspiegabilmente - più in ombra furono protagonisti di articoli apparsi sulle più insigni riviste italiane ed internazionali, nonché di importanti pubblicazioni. Quasi tutti raggruppati attorno all'associazione MSA, frequentando la Triennale, le medesime gallerie d'arte e riunendosi negli stessi studi di architettura, personaggi già affermati come Albini, i BBPR, Gardella, Figini e Pollini intrecciavano i propri progetti con Asnago e Vender, i Latis, Gho', i GPA Monti, Malchiodi, Mangiarotti e Morassutti, ridisegnando il futuro di Milano.

Dal 1952 ha lavorato nella Sicilia occidentale conducendo inchieste, scioperi 'alla rovescia' e azioni colletti nonviolente, digiunando, documentando e denunciando il dominio mafioso, avviando la prima radio libera, scrivendo poesie, con marce e costituendo centri e progetti per lo piena occupazione: centinaia di volontari si sono uniti a queste iniziative per consolidare uno straordinario fronte civile, a 'continuazione della Resistenza, senza sparare'. Dolci ha operato convinto che nessun vero cambiamento possa prescindere dal coinvolgimento, dalla partecipazione diretto degli interessati, dalla cultura o e dalle competenze locali. Negli anni, l'impegno educativo ha assunto un ruolo centrale con l'approfondimento e la sperimentazione della struttura maieutica.

'In una scuola elementare, domandai ai bambini quali erano i loro sogni per il futuro. Ha risposto subito Massimo: 'Diventare miliardario!' Sogno, condiviso dagli altri bambini, che ci fa riflettere. Oggi è difficile educare, perché il nostro impegno di formare a scuola il cittadino che collabora, che antepone il bene comune a quello egoista, che rispetta e aiuta gli altri, è quotidianamente vanificato dai modelli proposti da chi possiede i mezzi per illudere che la felicità è nel denaro, nel potere, nell'emergere con tutti i mezzi, compresa la violenza. A questa forza perversa noi dobbiamo contrapporre l'educazione dei sentimenti: parlare di amore a chi crede nella violenza, parlare di pace preventiva a chi vuole la guerra. Dobbiamo imparare a fare le cose difficili, come disse Gianni Rodari in una delle sue ultime poesie: 'Parlare al sordo, mostrare la rosa al cieco, liberare gli schiavi che si credono liberi'.' Lo studio BBPR, fondato a Milano nel 1932 da Gian Luigi Banfi, Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso, Enrico Peressutti ed Ernesto Nathan Rogers, costituisce uno dei primi e più interessanti casi di sodalizio artistico e culturale fondato sul lavoro di gruppo. Questa forma d'intesa operativa si è rivelata un'intuizione fondamentale, che ha permesso di superare la dimensione artigianale dello studio professionale per orientarsi verso una concezione dell'attività dell'architetto basata sull'apporto collegiale come principio metodologico, e capace di affrontare temi sempre più vasti ed eterogenei, dal disegno degli interni alla progettazione paesaggistica. Grazie anche all'impegno culturale dei singoli soci su diversi fronti - la partecipazione ai CIAM e al Movimento di Studi per l'Architettura (MSA), l'insegnamento universitario tra Milano e Venezia, l'attività con le Triennali a partire dal 1933, e la direzione di 'Domus' e di 'Casabella-Continuità' da parte di Rogers - lo studio diventa, tra gli anni Quaranta e Sessanta, un vero e proprio laboratorio della modernità e un ponte con il dibattito internazionale per la diffusione della cultura progettuale italiana.
