Ogni rilettura di Andersen, specie in età ultrasatura di vita e delle associate esperienze è un effettivo elixir fatto pagina, un integratore vitaminico, un farmaco per niente imparentato con l'acido lisergico sperimentato da Huxley o con il Peyotl - carne di dio - dei surrealisti. La tarda rilettura mi ha consigliato di non staccare dal testo di Andersen il saggio di Maria Petersen poetessa e narratrice di Francoforte sull'Oder cui va anche il seguente e memorabile incipit (perfetta identificazione con lo spirito del suo autore): 'Al tempo del diluvio universale che scompiglio orribile tra le acque della terra!'.

Andersen aveva tutte le ragioni per credere d'aver vissuto una fiaba: figlio di un ciabattino, cresciuto in una famiglia povera, e presto orfano di padre, a soli quattordici anni abbandona la piccola Odense e se ne va per il mondo in cerca di fortuna. Intanto a Copenaghen, poi chissà. A guidarlo è un sogno: il giovane Hans Christian non sa bene ancora come, ma ci riuscirà; d'altronde, una fattucchiera ha letto i fondi di caffè e ha rivelato alla madre: 'suo figlio diventerà un grand'uomo!'. Andersen sa che, sia pure tra mille difficoltà e stenti, tra ostilità e derisioni, da grande farà l''artista', non importa se ballerino, cantante o poeta. E infatti gli basteranno pochi anni per entrare a pieno titolo nell'élite culturale europea come uno dei più grandi scrittori di fiabe. Da quel momento in avanti la scena del mondo è tutta per lui: è accolto nelle corti più importanti, dove re e regine si commuovono mentre lo ascoltano leggere le sue storie, e nei più prestigiosi salotti, dove incontra gli artisti del mo mento: da Dumas a Rossini, da Dickens a Wagner. Dotato di un'inquieta tensione romantica e di un'autentica consapevolezza borghese, Andersen 'cambia radicalmente la prospettiva della fiaba'. Prima di lui maghi, streghe, gnomi, draghi, fate e orchi erano figure dotate di poteri speciali, dalla sapienza impenetrabile, misteriosa, ignota al lettore. Andersen, al contrario, opera una sorta di umanizzazione di animali e cose, 'mettendo in scena protagonisti di sconsolata umanità, immergendosi in creature che per il semplice fatto di non esistere in natura sono segretamente afflitte da un rovello interiore'.
