Le lettere al Cossilla sono inviate a un amico, il tono è spontaneo e amichevole, e costituiscono un vero e proprio diario della vita del Petitti, uno squarcio sul quotidiano mondo subalpino, oltre che su quello politico. Le lettere al Mittermaier, invece, rappresentano uno scambio epistolare tra due uomini di cultura e costituiscono un`importante fonte sulla vita culturale e politica di quegli anni. Le lettere offrono una testimonianza delle discussioni che si ebbero in Europa e in Italia nella prima metà dell`Ottocento intorno al problema dell`organizzazione carceraria, affiorano i primi problemi sociali che allora venivano affrontati, i dibattiti che precedettero le riforme carlo-albertine e la preparazione dei codici.
