'La guerra alla guerra non sarà una gita della domenica o una scampagnata', scrisse nel 1910 William James (1842-1910), uno dei più importanti filosofi americani. Che fare, allora? La risposta è in questi suoi scritti, proposti in traduzione al lettore italiano. Trovare un 'equivalente morale della guerra' con cui convogliare l'aggressività e il bisogno di azione e sacrificio verso scopi pacifici e socialmente utili può sembrare una posizione ingenua, idealistica o angusta, ma non si può negare che impone di riflettere sulla natura umana, cioè su quel qualcosa che sta al fondo di tutte le guerre e di tutte le esplosioni di violenza collettiva, qualunque siano le cause economiche, sociali, politiche, ideologiche contingenti di questa o quella.

I sentimenti morali, secondo la teoria delle emozioni di William James, dipendono dallo sviluppo delle energie fisiche. La formazione del carattere richiede così una disciplina del corpo. Ma tale processo espressivo è sottoposto a tendenze imitative legate ad abiti e modelli sociali. Di qui l'esemplarità di certi individui, capaci di ispirare la condotta degli altri. L'importanza degli individui non riguarda solo i tipi eccezionali, perché noi tutti viviamo al di sotto dei nostri limiti, e abbiamo capacità che abitualmente non usiamo ma che in certe circostanze - amore, disperazione, ira, fervore - possono liberare grandi energie. Ciò alimenta il nesso reciproco tra potenziali individuali d'azione e forze collettive, perché «la comunità ristagna senza l'impulso degli individui» mentre «l'impulso si spegne senza il favore della comunità». Nei saggi qui raccolti, scritti tra il 1880 e il 1906, James identifica nella guerra la situazione in cui l'interdipendenza tra individuo e comunità scatena le forze più potenti, anche se terribili. Ponendo il problema di trovare equivalenti morali alternativi alla guerra, ma altrettanto capaci di attrarre gli esseri umani ed espanderne le forze, James disegna un programma di riforma sociale basato sulla creazione di un servizio civile obbligatorio che possa nutrire un'epica del quotidiano.
