Mancall Peter (EDT), Johnson Benjamin (EDT) Title : Making of the American West
Author: Mancall Peter (EDT), Johnson Benjamin (EDT)
Publisher: Abc-Clio Inc

The 13 essays collected here for undergraduates and above portray the social history of the American West between 1800 and the 1910s through the perspectives of specific groups that lived in the region. The mythology of John Wayne's West is put to the test against the stories of American Indians, Asians and Asian Americans, Latinos, Blacks, outlaws, artists, entrepreneurs, trappers and traders, soldiers, and Mormons. Unifying themes in the collection include the assumptions that people make their own histories and attach their own meanings to the circumstances of their lives; as well as the importance of economics, race, and place. Primary documents supplement the text. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Author: Cunliffe Juliette, Johnson Carol Ann (PHT), Peters Patricia (ILT)
Publisher: Bowtie Pr

Written by one of the world’s most respected authorities on Tibetan breeds, Juliette Cunliffe, a British native living in Tibet, this introductory guide to the Tibetan Terrier offers a rare look into this mystical canine from Land of Snows. Unlike any other dog, the Tibetan Terrier, a member of the AKC Non-Sporting Group, is not a terrier, but rather a fun-loving companion dog prized for his snowshoed feet, his hardy constitution, and his profuse coat covering his deep brown eyes, giving him an expression that reveals his true exuberant personality. With years of experience as an international judge and owner of the Tibetan breeds, the author provides a complete historical overview of the breed in its native land, where it was regarded as a talisman of great value, as well as in the United Kingdom and the United States. The extensive coverage of the breed in America is accompanied by historical photographs of the dogs that made the most lasting impact on the breed in this country. Filled with color photographs that capture the heart and spirit of this exceptional companion breed, this Comprehensive Owner’s Guide provides up-to-date and informative chapters on the breed’s characteristics, puppy selection, care, house-training and positive-motivational obedience training, healthcare, and much more.

Voltaire, Constantine Peter (TRN), Johnson Diane (INT) Title : Candide
Author: Voltaire, Constantine Peter (TRN), Johnson Diane (INT)
Publisher: Modern Library

A flamboyant and controversial personality of enormous wit and intelligence, Voltaire remains one of the most influential figures of the eighteenth-century Enlightenment. Candide, his masterpiece, is a brilliant satire of the theory that our world is “the best of all possible worlds.” The book traces the picaresque adventures of the guileless Candide, who is forced into the army, flogged, shipwrecked, betrayed, robbed, separated from his beloved Cunegonde, tortured by the Inquisition, et cetera, all without losing his resilience and will to live and pursue a happy life.
This Modern Library edition, published to celebrate the seventy-fifth anniversary of Random House,
is a facsimile of the first book ever released under the Random House colophon. It includes the timeless illustrations by Rockwell Kent, a twentieth-century artist whose wit and genius serve as a counterpart and compliment to Voltaire's.

Hankerson Darrel R., Harris Greg A., Johnson Peter D. Title : Introduction to Information Theory and Data Compression
Author: Hankerson Darrel R., Harris Greg A., Johnson Peter D.
Publisher: Chapman & Hall

An effective blend of carefully explained theory and practical applications, this text imparts the fundamentals of both information theory and data compression. Although the two topics are related, this unique text allows either topic to be presented independently, and it was specifically designed so that the data compression section requires no prior knowledge of information theory. The treatment of information theory, while theoretical and abstract, is quite elementary, making this text less daunting than many others. After presenting the fundamental definitions and results of the theory, the authors then apply the theory to memoryless, discrete channels with zeroth-order, one-state sources. The chapters on data compression acquaint students with a myriad of lossless compression methods and then introduce two lossy compression methods. Students emerge from this study competent in a wide range of techniques. The authors' presentation is highly practical but includes some important proofs, either in the text or in the exercises, so instructors can, if they choose, place more emphasis on the mathematics.Introduction to Information Theory and Data Compression, Second Edition is ideally suited for an upper-level or graduate course for students in mathematics, engineering, and computer science.Features:·Expanded discussion of the historical and theoretical basis of information theory that builds a firm, intuitive grasp of the subject·Reorganization of theoretical results along with new exercises, ranging from the routine to the more difficult, that reinforce students' ability to apply the definitions and results in specific situations.·Simplified treatment of the algorithm(s) of Gallager and Knuth·Discussion of the information rate of a code and the trade-off between error correction and information rate·Treatment of probabilistic finite state source automata, including basic results, examples, references, and exercises·Octave and MATLAB image compression codes included in an appendix for use with the exercises and projects involving transform methods·Supplementary materials, including software, available for download from the authors' Web site at www.dms.auburn.edu/compression

Barnstone Howard, Cartier-Bresson Henri (PHT), Stoller Ezra (PHT), Sweeney James Johnson (INT), Brink Peter H. (INT), Cartier-Bresson Henri, Stoller Ezra, Museum of Fine Arts Houston (COR) Title : The Galveston That Was
Author: Barnstone Howard, Cartier-Bresson Henri (PHT), Stoller Ezra (PHT), Sweeney James Johnson (INT), Brink Peter H. (INT), Cartier-Bresson Henri, Stoller Ezra, Museum of Fine Arts Houston (COR)
Publisher: Texas A & M Univ Pr

In a 1963 novel, Edna Ferber compared the city of Galveston to Miss Havisham, the gray, mournful abandoned bride of Dickens’ Great Expectations. A thriving port city in the nineteenth century, Galveston suffered catastrophe in the twentieth as a deadly hurricane and shifting economics dropped a pall over its waterfront and Victorian mansions.

Originally conceived as a requiem for the faded city, The Galveston That Was (developed by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and funded by Jean and Dominique de Menil) instead helped resurrect the city. Architect-author Howard Barnstone, renowned portrait photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, and architect-photographer Ezra Stoller captured the soul of the city in The Galveston That Was and as a result, inspired a major and successful effort to restore Galveston’s historic architectural treasures. Many of the buildings pictured in the book have since been restored, and the pace of demolition slowed dramatically after the book’s initial publication.

In 1994, Rice University Press, in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and George and Cynthia Mitchell, published an updated edition of the book. This new printing of the book, now under the Texas A&M University Press imprint, contains the text annotations and updates, plus Peter H. Brink’s afterword, that were added to the 1994 edition.

Harrington Peter, Johnson Lee (EDT), Chandler David G. (EDT) Title : Plassey 1757
Author: Harrington Peter, Johnson Lee (EDT), Chandler David G. (EDT)
Publisher: Osprey Pub Co

After relatively lowly beginnings as a writer in the East India Company, Robert Clive rose to be perhaps the most important single figure in the history of British involvement in India. At Plassey on 23 June 1757 Clive's 3,500 native and East India Company troops faced an army of 50,000 under the French supported nawab Siraj-ud-daula. Having succeeded in keeping his powder dry in a torrential rainstorm, Clive's guns were able to open a murderous fire on the enemy. Siraj-ud-daula's attack was beaten off and the counter-attack which Clive launched swept the field; with only the French gunners fighting to the last.
