This book intends to provide an overview of current research on halophilic microorganisms, highlighting the diversity of life forms adapted to tolerate high salt concentrations and low water activities. Most of the 35 chapters are based on lectures presented during the international symposium 'Halophiles 2004', held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in September 2004. Descriptions of the diverse high-salt environments in which halophiles are found are followed by sections devoted to the properties of halophilic Archaea, of halophilic and halotolerant Bacteria, and of different groups of salt-loving Eukarya, including fungi, algae and protozoa. Extensive information is provided about fungi adapted to life at high salt concentrations, a group that was poorly known until very recently. Questa edizione riguarda i fondi di scultura e di arti applicate del museo, il cui studio è affrontato secondo gli stessi criteri metodologici adottati nei precedenti cataloghi: la revisione generale dei materiali posseduti e il puntuale confronto con gli inventari del museo, a distanza di mezzo secolo dall'ultimo censimento, ha portato anche in questo caso a nuove scoperte e ad aggiornate riletture di opere note.

Narratrice famosa in tutto il mondo, e molto amata anche nel nostro paese, Nina Berberova (San Pietroburgo 1901 - Philadelphia 1993) esordì come poeta giovanissima, quando ancora viveva in Russia. Emigrata prima a Berlino nel 1922, poi a Parigi nel 1923 insieme a Vladislav Chodasevic - uno dei maggiori poeti russi del Novecento - continuò a coltivare la poesia, pubblicando però quasi esclusivamente saggi, romanzi e racconti. Solo ottantenne, dopo i riconoscimenti ottenuti dal volume di memorie 'Il corsivo è mio', Nina Berberova decise di raccogliere in volume una scelta delle sue liriche composte fra il 1921 e il 1983, molte inedite, altre apparse nelle riviste russe dell'emigrazione tra gli anni Venti e i Sessanta.
