'Padri e figli' (1862) è l'analisi impietosa del conflitto generazionale che domina la Russia degli anni Sessanta dell'Ottocento. Ai padri, aristocratici, idealisti, immobili nella loro privilegiata sclerosi, si contrappongono i figli, democratici, materialisti, nichilisti. Impegnati a costruire un solido universo al negativo, rifiutano valori, principi, fedi: l'importante, dichiarano con arroganza, è cominciare a vivere «senza». Senza illusioni, senza palliativi, senza falsi idoli. Ma sono poi così falsi gli idoli contro cui essi si scagliano? È la domanda che percorre tutto il romanzo senza trovare una risposta univoca. Non ci sono verità consolatorie nell'universo di Turgenev: non quelle fideistiche che abbraccia Dostoevskij, né quelle etiche in cui si rifugia Tolstoj. When Fathers and Sons was first published in Russia, in 1862, it was met with a blaze of controversy about where Turgenev stood in relation to his account of generational misunderstanding. Was he criticizing the worldview of the conservative aesthete, Pavel Kirsanov, and the older generation, or that of the radical, cerebral medical student, Evgenii Bazarov, representing the younger one? The critic Dmitrii Pisarev wrote at the time that the novel "stirs the mind . . . because everything is permeated with the most complete and most touching sincerity." N. N. Strakhov, a close friend of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, praised its "profound vitality." It is this profound vitality in Turgenev's characters that carry his novel of ideas to its rightful place as a work of art and as one of the classics of Russian Literature.

Turgenev was the most liberal-spirited and unqualifiedly humane of all the great nineteenth-century Russian novelists, and in Virgin Soil, his biggest and most ambitious work, he sought to balance his deep affection for his country and his people with his growing apprehensions about what their future held in store. At the heart of the book is the story of a young man and a young woman, torn between love and politics, who struggle to make headway against the complacency of the powerful, the inarticulate misery of the powerless, and the stifling conventions of provincial life. This rich and complex book, at once a love story, a devastating, and bitterly funny social satire, and, perhaps most movingly of all, a heartfelt celebration of the immense beauty of the Russian countryside, is a tragic masterpiece in which one of the world's finest novelists confronts the enduring question of the place of happiness in a political world.

When Turgenev published Diary of a Superfluous Man in 1850, he created one of the first literary portraits of the alienated man. Turgenev once said that there was a great deal of himself in the unsuccessful lovers who appear in his fiction. This failure, along with painful self-consciousness, is a central fact for the ailing Chulkaturin in this melancholy tale. As he reflects on his life, he tells the story of Liza, whom he loved, and a prince, whom she loved instead, and the curious turns all their lives took.

Gli esordi letterari di Ivan Turgenev sono legati alla poesia tanto che, dopo la morte di Lermentov, fu considerato il più degno erede della tradizione poetica puskiniana. Il suo brusco passaggio dalla poesia alla prosa fu uno dei segnali più rilevanti del definitivo chiudersi di un'epoca, quella puskiniana, caratterizzata dal predominio della poesia. Il racconto 'Acque tranquille' può essere considerato un esempio emblematico della narrativa di Ivan S. Turgenev: è la storia, tipicamente russa, di un amore romantico e disperato, che ruota intorno all'enigmatica figura femminile di Mar'ja Pavlovna, promessa a un tragico destino. L'azione si svolge nella campagna russa dell'Ottocento e il protagonista, Vladimir Sergeic, si trova suo malgrado coinvolto negli eventi, cui assiste senza poterne modificare il corso. Il respiro del racconto è proprio quello del grande romanzo russo dell'Ottocento, con in più la particolare commistione di romanticismo e realismo psicologico caratteristica di Turgenev.

Pubblicato nel 1856, questo è il primo romanzo di Turgenev. Rudin, il protagonista, rappresenta il mondo intellettuale degli anni Quaranta; è il primo di quegli 'uomini superflui' che ritroveremo costantemente nell'opera turgeneviana, idealisti infiammati, eloquenti ma privi di volontà, incapaci di azioni e di scelte.

Quando nella casa di campagna di Nikolaj Kirsanov arriva il figlio Arkadij con l'amico Evgenij Bazarov, si delinea subito il conflitto tra vecchie e nuove generazioni. Evgenij è un giovane medico, fiducioso solo nelle scienze sperimentali, un nichilista, lo definisce l'autore, con un termine che avrebbe poi avuto grande fortuna. Le sue idee turbano Kirsanov e irritano suo fratello, lo scettico Pavel. In una città vicina i due incontrano la bella vedova Anna Odincova di cui Bazarov si innamora, ma da cui è rifiutato. Dopo un duello con Pavel, Evgenij contrae, durante un'autopsia, un'infezione che non vuole curare e muore assistito da Anna, con pietà, ma senza amore.
