Una pedagogia dell'amore non può non misurarsi con due parole che servono a nominarlo: eros, che indica l'intenzione di attrarre la persona che si ama; agape che invece indica, piuttosto, il desiderio di giovare alle persone che si incontrano e che ha una profonda affinità con la pratica della carità. Una possibile convergenza tra i due termini può essere assunta dalla definizione dataci nel Simposio da Socrate (che cita un'autrice, Diotima): 'amore è il desiderio di possedere il bene per sempre'. Le ricerche di didattica che vengono ritenute dall'autore 'avanzate', si avvalgono, ribaltandolo però, di un concetto comeniano ben noto, che diventa, in quest'opera: è possibile apprendere tutto da tutti, da ogni punto di vista, a cominciare dai più piccoli. Egli presenta infine due ambiti concettuali che giudica promettenti, quello di oggetti gravidi di pensiero (oggetti-concetto) e quello delle forme della mente che giungono dai sensi, 'trattate' poi da conoscenze che la mente stessa possiede.
