Rees Celia Title : The Wish House
Author: Rees Celia
Publisher: Candlewick Pr

From the best-selling author of WITCH CHILD and SORCERESS comes another engrossing, atmospheric novel — following a teenage boy as he uncovers the secrets of the mysterious and provocative Wish House.

It's the start of summer vacation, and fifteen-year-old Richard has discovered that a family has taken up residence in the usually deserted Wish House. Richard is intrigued by both the house and the bohemian family now living there. The father, Jethro Dalton, is an internationally renowned painter; his seemingly licentious wife is fascinated by herbs and cures. But it's their beautiful and vibrant daughter, Clio, the muse for Jethro's paintings, who draws Richard utterly into the Daltons' world. Soon Richard finds himself so captivated by Clio that he steals off to the woods to spend days and nights with her, meanwhile struggling to understand and fit in with her eccentric clan. How could he know that some mysteries are best left alone — and that some betrayals can never be forgiven?

Lowe Celia Title : Wild Profusion
Author: Lowe Celia
Publisher: Princeton Univ Pr

Wild Profusion tells the fascinating story of biodiversity conservation in Indonesia in the decade culminating in the great fires of 1997-98--a time when the country's environment became a point of concern for social and environmental activists, scientists, and the many fishermen and farmers nationwide who suffered from degraded environments and faced accusations that they were destroying nature. Celia Lowe argues that biodiversity, in 1990s Indonesia, implied a particular convergence of nature, nation, science, and identity that made Indonesians' mapping of the concept distinct within transnational practices of nature conservation at the time.

Lowe recounts the efforts of Indonesian biologists to document the species of the Togean Islands, to 'develop' Togean people, and to turn this archipelago off the coast of Sulawesi into a national park. Indonesian scientists aspired to a conservation biology that was both internationally recognizable and politically effective in the Indonesian context. Simultaneously, Lowe describes the experiences of Togean Sama people who had their own understandings of nature and nation. To place Sama and scientist into the same conceptual frame, Lowe studies Sama ideas in the context of transnational thought rather than local knowledge.

In tracking the practice of conservation biology in a postcolonial setting, Wild Profusion explores what in nature can count as important and for whom.

Rivenbark Celia Title : Bless Your Heart, Tramp
Author: Rivenbark Celia
Publisher: Griffin

From the wickedly hilarious pen of Southern humorist Celia Rivenbark comes a collection of essays that brings to mind Dave Barry (in high heels) or Jeff Foxworthy (in a prom dress).

Step into the wacky world of “womanless wedding” fund-raisers, in which Bubbas wear boas. Meet two sisters who fight rural boredom by washing Budweiser cans and cutting them into pieces to make clothing. Learn why the word snow sends any right-thinking Southerner careening to the Food Lion for extra loaves of bread and little else.
Humor columnist and slightly crazed belle-by-birth Celia Rivenbark tackles these and other lard-laden subjects in Bless Your Heart, Tramp, a hilarious look at Southern---and just plain human---foibles, up-close and personal.
So pour yourself a glass of sweet tea and curl up on the pie-azza with Bless Your Heart, Tramp.

Schultz Celia E. Title : Women's Religious Activity in the Roman Republic
Author: Schultz Celia E.
Publisher: Univ of North Carolina Pr

Expanding the discussion of religious participation of women in ancient Rome, Celia E. Schultz demonstrates that in addition to observances of marriage, fertility, and childbirth, there were more--and more important--religious opportunities available to Roman women than are commonly considered.

Based on research in ancient literature, inscriptions, and archaeological remains from the fifth to the first century B.C.E., Schultz's study shows that women honored gods unaffiliated with domestic matters, including Hercules and Jupiter; they took part in commercial, military, and political rites; they often worshipped alongside men; and they were not confined to the private sphere, the traditional domain of women. The Vestal Virgins did not stand alone but were instead the most prominent members of a group of women who held high-profile religious positions: priestesses of Ceres, Liber, and Venus; the flaminica Dialis and the regina sacrorum; other cult officials; and aristocratic matrons who often took leading roles in religious observances even though they were not priestesses. Schultz argues that women were vital participants--both professional and nonprofessional--in the religion of the Roman Republic and that social and marital status, in addition to gender, were important factors in determining their opportunities for religious participation in the public sphere.

Deane-Drummond Celia E. Title : Wonder And Wisdom
Author: Deane-Drummond Celia E.
Publisher: Templeton Foundation Pr

What has wonder, that apparently innocent feeling of amazement so common in little children, to do with wisdom, often thought to be the privilege of those who are old? What has theology and religious experience to do with scientific investigation of the natural world?

Professor Celia Deane-Drummond’s exploration of these themes expands thedialogue between science and religion. She begins her study with reflectionson the emotion of wonder, tracing the history of its meaning from its Indo-European roots to the present, focusing on the experience of the naturalworld, including that described by contemporary cosmology.Incorporating insights from both Eastern and Western religious traditions,
as well as African spirituality, she segues to a discussion of wisdom. Sheconsiders: natural wisdom, looking at evolutionary convergence and design inthe natural world and how it might mesh with theological understanding ofnatural wisdom; human identity; and the notion of God as wisdom. She also discusses the origin of the cosmos and the role of God as creator, as well as whether there is wisdom in nature and what the role, if any, of neuroscience in wisdom as a facet of human nature might be.

Returning to the theme of wonder, she muses on wonder as it relates tothe wisdom of God and the wisdom of the cross. She shows that by weavingwonder and wisdom together, a deeper spirituality can surface that integratestheology and science. “If wisdom is the voice for theology at the boundaryof science, so wonder reminds theology that science too offers its own wisdomthat needs to be taken into account,” she concludes.

Farber Celia Title : Serious Adverse Events
Author: Farber Celia
Publisher: Random House Inc

Controversial AIDS reporter Celia Farber collects twenty years of investigative work on AIDS.

Building on her much discussed cover story in Harper's Magazine—“Out of Control: AIDS and the Corruption of Medical Science”—Celia Farber's Serious Adverse Events: An Uncensored History Of AIDS asks important questions about the costs and results of the two-decade long “war on AIDS.”

Here Farber conducts new interviews with controversial AIDS dissidents, including UC Berkeley's Peter Duesberg, UNAM's Harvey Bialy, and Nobelist Kary Mullis. Their views on HIV and cancer—rarely discussed in the mainstream press—are considered at length.

Also included are accounts of some of the most dramatic and controversial questions caught up in the fight against AIDS. Farber investigates AIDS co-factors, unexplained causes of immunodeficiency (HIV-negative AIDS), estimates of the AIDS epidemic in Africa, and, perhaps most importantly, drug treatment plans. In 1989, Farber was the first magazine journalist to call attention to the dangers of high-dose AZT monotherapy. In 2000, she took aim at David Ho's “hit hard, hit early” treatment plan. In both cases, Farber's suspicions turned out to be correct. AIDS drugs, when improperly prescribed or promoted, can be much more deadly than AIDS itself.

Farber's candor and extensive research sheds new light on the AIDS epidemic and its important effects on our current state of medical research.

Celia Daileader Title : Racism, Misogyny, and the Othello Myth
Author: Celia Daileader
Publisher: CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS

Through research spanning four centuries, in genres as diverse as English Renaissance drama, abolitionist literature, gothic horror and contemporary romance, Celia Daileader questions why Anglo-American culture's most widely-read canonical narratives of inter-racial sex feature a black male and a white female. This study considers the cultural obsession with Shakespeare's Othello, alongside the more pertinent issue of white male sexual predation upon black females. Daileader argues that myths about black male sexual rapacity and the danger of racial 'pollution' were exploited to 'protect' white female sexuality and exorcise collective guilt.

Ugresic Dubravka, Hawkesworth Celia, Heim Michael Henry, Searls Damion Title : Lend Me Your Character
Author: Ugresic Dubravka, Hawkesworth Celia, Heim Michael Henry, Searls Damion
Publisher: Dalkey Archive Pr

From the story of Steffie Cvek to 'The Kharms Case,' the pieces in Dubravka Ugresic's collection Lend Me Your Character are always smart and endlessly entertaining. The former story paints a picture of a harassed and vulnerable typist whose life is shaped entirely by clichés. She searches endlessly for an elusive romantic love in a narrative punctuated by threadbare advice from women's magazines and constructed like a sewing pattern. The latter story is one of Ugresic's funniest and is about the strained relationship between a persistent translator and an unresponsive publisher.

The stories collected in Lend Me Your Character-the novella 'Steffie Cvek in the Jaws of Life' and a collection of short stories entitled 'Life Is a Fairy Tale'-solidify Ugresic's reputation as one of Eastern Europe's most playful and inventive writers.

Tichi Cecelia Title : Exposes And Excess
Author: Tichi Cecelia
Publisher: Univ of Pennsylvania Pr

From robber barons to titanic CEOs, from the labor unrest of the 1880s to the mass layoffs of the 1990s, two American Gilded Ages—one in the early 1900s, another in the final years of the twentieth century—mirror each other in their laissez-faire excess and rampant social crises. Both eras have ignited the civic passions of investigative writers who have drafted diagnostic blueprints for urgently needed change. The compelling narratives of the muckrakers—Upton Sinclair, Ida Tarbell, Lincoln Steffens, and Ray Stannard Baker among them—became bestsellers and prizewinners a hundred years ago; today, Cecelia Tichi notes, they have found their worthy successors in writers such as Barbara Ehrenreich, Eric Schlosser, and Naomi Klein.

In Exposés and Excess Tichi explores the two Gilded Ages through the lens of their muckrakers. Drawing from her considerable and wide-ranging work in American studies, Tichi details how the writers of the first muckraking generation used fact-based narratives in magazines such as McClure's to rouse the U.S. public to civic action in an era of unbridled industrial capitalism and fear of the immigrant 'dangerous classes.' Offering a damning cultural analysis of the new Gilded Age, Tichi depicts a booming, insecure, fortress America of bulked-up baby strollers, McMansion housing, and an obsession with money-as-lifeline in an era of deregulation, yawning income gaps, and idolatry of the market and its rock-star CEOs.

No one has captured this period of corrosive boom more acutely than the group of nonfiction writers who burst on the scene in the late 1990s with their exposés of the fast-food industry, the world of low-wage work, inadequate health care, corporate branding, and the multibillion-dollar prison industry. And nowhere have these authors—Ehrenreich, Schlosser, Klein, Laurie Garrett, and Joseph Hallinan—revealed more about their emergence as writers and the connections between journalism and literary narrative than in the rich and insightful interviews that round out the book.

With passion and wit, Exposés and Excess brings a literary genre up to date at a moment when America has gone back to the future.
