Harrison William H. Title : In Praise of Mixed Religion
Author: Harrison William H.
Publisher: McGill Queens Univ

When asked 'What religion do you follow?' the typical answer is to name a specific group, or to respond 'None.' An increasing number of people, however, are intentionally combining elements from various religious heritages, demonstrating that religions do not have firm boundaries, nor are they purely distinct. In Praise of Mixed Religion discusses the concept of syncretism, the term for the mixing of religious perspectives. The religious studies discipline has traditionally distinguished between two responses to syncretism: a subjective view, which treats syncretism as morally reprehensible, and an objective view, which treats it as a morally neutral phenomenon. William Harrison adopts a third perspective, the advocacy view, which claims that mixing religions is a good and necessary process. He cites countless examples - such as Islam's transformative encounter with Greek thought - from both history and recent years to show how religious traditions have gained theological and practical wisdom by borrowing key ideas, beliefs, and practices from outside their own movements. By encouraging syncretism, In Praise of Mixed Religion contests the hard boundaries between religious worldviews and presents a dramatic alternative for thinking and talking about religion.

Harrison Chris (PHT), Williams Val (CON) Title : I Belong Jarra
Author: Harrison Chris (PHT), Williams Val (CON)
Publisher: Schilt Pub

'I have forgotten the language of my fathers and have not yet learned the language of my children.
I live in a foreign country, I amk an immigrant, I live in a little yellow house by the woods in Oslo with my family.
I was born and brought up in a tough industrial town on the south bank of the Tyne, Jarrow, Britian. I call it home.
My mother and father are getting on and moving out, cutting me adrift with no way back. Combined with an incoming Tory government that seems determined to wreck what they have missed in the 80's and I have been forced to think about who I am and where I belong.
I am photographing my hometown and the people I know there, to try and establish how much of where I am from determines who I am. Why I can't let go? What makes Jarrow so special? It has a history going back to Roman times. The Venerable Bede was a Jarra Lad and the Jarrow Hunger March is world famous. None of which makes it special to me. For me it's something intangible. Jarrow is a place that exists more in my imagination than in fact, it's a collection of stories and I am an unreliable narrator. If photography turns reality into metaphor then I am trying to photograph the metaphors. Hopefully by photographing my home, a place I know intimately, I can show something we all recognize. As L.P. Hartley said: 'The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.'

Photography doesn't come easy to me, I fail more than I succeed. Knowledge of my craft is vital: The camera is not a tool but a partner, albeit a reluctant one. I take photographs because I have to confirm that what I'm seeing is real. All my work is about Britain, it's not about notions of Britishness. I am interested in the Britain that remains rigidly class-bound and how that has warped everything and always has. There is no irony in my work, I'm a romantic. Irony requires distance, but I want to get as close as possible to my subject. Each essay is a reference point on an imaginary map that I'm using to find my way home.'

Fredeman William E. (EDT), Lewis Roger C. (CON), Cowan Jane (CON), Harrison Anthony H. (CON) Title : The Correspondence of Dante Gabriel Rossetti 9
Author: Fredeman William E. (EDT), Lewis Roger C. (CON), Cowan Jane (CON), Harrison Anthony H. (CON)
Publisher: Boydell & Brewer Inc

On November 11, 1878, Rossetti wrote to Watts-Dunton: `Friday night exactly made a year since my return to London in 1877 & you know how well I have been the whole of that time.' Indeed, in 1878-79, Rossetti lived what might appear to be a more tranquil version of his first years at Cheyne Walk. The long breach with Ford Madox Brown finally ended, and he began to see his brother regularly again; and he managed to complete a number of commissions, and other paintings. However, as the correspondence collected here show, his depression was seldom far away; he was often unable to work. His repeated letters to Watts-Dunton and Shields, asking them to come over, reveal his need for companionship, preferably in his own home, that was a constant of his character. There are also a number of letters to Jane Morris.

Fredeman William E. (EDT), Lewis Roger C., Cowan Jane, Harrison Anthony, Newal Christopher Title : The Last Decade
Author: Fredeman William E. (EDT), Lewis Roger C., Cowan Jane, Harrison Anthony, Newal Christopher
Publisher: Boydell & Brewer Inc

The period from 1875-77 covers the greater part of what Rossetti's brother William later characterized as 'the chloralized years' when the amounts he took, usually accompanied by alcohol, eventually led to another breakdown and even alienated his old friend Ford Madox Brown for a time. In his mounting troubles with creditors, patrons, and various legal matters he depended more and more on Theodore Watts-Dunton. The sojourn at Aldwick Lodge, Bognor, from the fall of 1875 to July 1876, was marked by Rossetti's ever-deepening depression. The artist, who had perhaps hoped for another idyllic period with Janey Morris and her daughters in residence modelling for his paintings, must have been bitterly disappointed. Fearing imminent death, he directed George Hake to make new provisions in his will, emphasizing the importance of burning all Janey's letters to him. Despite his physical condition, he nevertheless completed or began such major works as La Bella Mano, Astarte Syriaca, The Sea-Spell, The Blessed Damozel,I/> and MnemosyneI/> amongst others, as well as a number of portraits. He also worked with Frederic Shields on his engraving project, and acquired a new patron in William A. Turner.

Harrison Rodney (EDT), Williamson Christine Title : After Captain Cook
Author: Harrison Rodney (EDT), Williamson Christine
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield Pub Inc

The series emphasizes how the increasing involvement of Indigenous people in Australian archaeology is producing a shift in the discipline's focus. A dozen papers by contributors from archaeology and cultural heritage management discuss studies of Indigenous people's lives in Australian since the arrival of Europeans, and how that study intersects with native titles and heritage management. Among their topics are photography at Coranderrk Aboriginal Station during the 1860s, whether archaeology can address the principle of exclusive possession in native title, and recent investigations at the Ebenezer Mission cemetery. Oliver Paul, Harrison Max, Bolcom William Title : The New Grove Gospel, Blues and Jazz
Author: Oliver Paul, Harrison Max, Bolcom William
Publisher: W W Norton & Co Inc

The chapters of this book are in roughly chronological sequence: Spirituals, Blues, Gospels, Ragtime, and Jazz. The first three are by Paul Oliver, whose New Grove entry on the Blues is widely regarded as the definitive brief history of the genre. He has revised and expanded it for this book publication and, in addition, has extended the coverage of his essays on Spirituals in The New Grove to discuss both black and white traditions. Similarly, Oliver has revised and recast his coverage of Gospel music, which has been considerably expanded. Max Harrison's long entry on Jazz, which has also been extended, draws together the separate strands of the book to discuss the concept of Jazz as a matrix of mutually influential folk and popular styles. William Bolcom's short and definitive article on Ragtime has been revised, and all the bibliographies have been updated to include new and important works.
