Mcgill Melissa, Anderson Sam, Baker Joe, Blanco Richard, Coumans Hadrien Title : Constellation
Author: Mcgill Melissa, Anderson Sam, Baker Joe, Blanco Richard, Coumans Hadrien
Publisher: Princeton Architectural Pr

Beginning in June 2015, a new constellation will rise nightly above a small island in the middle of the Hudson River, sixty miles north of New York City. Every evening as the sun goes down, starry points of light will emerge one by one with the stars of the night sky above the Bannermans' Castle ruin between Cold Spring and Beacon, NY.

Constellation, the book, accompanies this mysterious but sublime installation, both as an extension and artifact of the project. The book is a visual and literary dialogue between artist Melissa McGill and several celebrated writers and poets, using the artwork as a springboard for inspiration and collaboration.

Helm Richard, Allison Enid (CON), Anderson Ian (CON), Barber Luke (CON), Bevan Lynne (CON) Title : Outside the Town
Author: Helm Richard, Allison Enid (CON), Anderson Ian (CON), Barber Luke (CON), Bevan Lynne (CON)
Publisher: Canterbury Archaeological Trust ltd

Outside the Town describes discoveries made between 2006 and 2009 during excavations immediately south-east of Canterbury’s Roman town wall. Situated within sight of Watling Street and the main entrance into the town from the Roman port at Dover, the investigations revealed a late Roman shrine along with finds indicative of ritual offerings and associated feasting. Apparently in use over a twenty year period from c AD 340, the shrine was positioned over a late Iron Age inhumation burial which may have originally been marked by a mound, and is one amongst a group of such late Iron Age and early Roman funerary monuments which exist in the vicinity. Four late third-century burials preceded the construction of the shrine, and represent part of an intriguing funerary and religious landscape now emerging.

Anderson John, Passman Richard Title : X-15
Author: Anderson John, Passman Richard
Publisher: Zenith Pr

In X-15, the exciting story of the X-15—the iconic rocket plane of the Cold War space race—is recounted by John Anderson, curator of aerodynamics at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. This experimental space plane was on the cutting edge of hypersonic aerodynamics, and its winged reentry from space foreshadowed the development of the Space Shuttle decades later. Launched from the wing of a modified B-52 bomber—again foretelling a concept that would be used decades later, in this case by SpaceShipOne and SpaceShipTwo—the ship rocketed higher and faster than any manned aircraft of the time. Designed to approach seven times the speed of sound, it was the first hypersonic aircraft ever created and was engineered to function both in the Earth’s atmosphere and at the edge of space. Illustrated with period NASA and USAF photographs, as well as exclusive Smithsonian photography of the first of three X-15s built, X-15 captures the risks and dangers of the X-15 program as Anderson follows the test pilots (including Neil Armstrong) who pushed the very limits of their piloting skills to master groundbreaking experimental technology. Even with the fatal crash of the third X-15, the overall success of the program helped pave the way for NASA to continue to the Moon—and this is the definitive, expertly curated, and beautifully illustrated account of its development.

Connett Paul, Irons Jeremy (FRW), Allen Cecilia (CON), Anderson Katy (CON), Anthony Richard (CON) Title : The Zero Waste Solution
Author: Connett Paul, Irons Jeremy (FRW), Allen Cecilia (CON), Anderson Katy (CON), Anthony Richard (CON)
Publisher: Chelsea Green Pub Co

Waste is something we all make every day but often pay little attention to. That's changing, and model programs around the globe show the many different ways a community can strive for, and achieve, zero-waste status.

Scientist-turned-activist Paul Connett, a leading international figure in decades-long battles to fight pollution, has championed efforts to curtail overconsumption and keep industrial toxins out of our air and drinking water and bodies. But he’s best known around the world for leading efforts to help communities deal with their waste in sustainable ways—in other words, to eliminate and reuse waste rather than burn it or stow it away in landfills.

In The Zero Waste Solution, Connett profiles the most successful zero-waste initiatives around the world, showing activists, planners, and entrepreneurs how to re-envision their community’s waste-handling process—by consuming less, turning organic waste into compost, recycling, reusing other waste, demanding nonwasteful product design, and creating jobs and bringing community members together in the process. The book also exposes the greenwashing behind renewed efforts to promote waste incinerators as safe, nontoxic energy suppliers, and gives detailed information on how communities can battle incineration projects that, even at their best, emit dangerous particles into the atmosphere, many of which remain unregulated or poorly regulated.

An important toolkit for anyone interested in creating sustainable communities, generating secure local jobs, and keeping toxic alternatives at bay.

Greenough Sarah, Anderson Nancy K., Harris Lindsay (CON), Ater Renee (CON), Powell Richard J. (FRW) Title : Tell It With Pride
Author: Greenough Sarah, Anderson Nancy K., Harris Lindsay (CON), Ater Renee (CON), Powell Richard J. (FRW)
Publisher: Yale Univ Pr

On July 18, 1863, six months after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, one of the first American units composed of African Americans stormed Fort Wagner in South Carolina, led by Colonel Robert Shaw Gould. Although the regiment suffered great losses, the Massachusetts 54th Volunteer Infantry legitimized the idea of blacks serving in the military, and Lincoln considered their sacrifice a turning point in the Civil War. Twenty years later, sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens began work on a bronze memorial for this heroic troop, which was installed on the Boston Common in 1897.

Tell It With Pride explores the enduring significance of this beloved monument. Original daguerreotypes, carte-de-visite portraits, and a full listing of the regiment’s members, along with vintage and contemporary artworks by Matthew Brady, Lewis Hine, and Carrie Mae Weems tell the story of the legacy of the Battle of Fort Wagner and the role of photography in memorializing the regiment then and now.

Hilberseimer Ludwig, Anderson Richard (EDT) Title : Metropolisarchitecture and Selected Essays
Author: Hilberseimer Ludwig, Anderson Richard (EDT)
Publisher: Columbia Univ Graduate School

In the 1920s, the urban theory of Ludwig Hilberseimer (1885-1967) redefined architecture's relationship to the city. His proposal for a high-rise city, where leisure, labor, and circulation would be vertically integrated, both frightened his contemporaries and offered a trenchant critique of the dynamics of the capitalist metropolis. Hilberseimer's Großstadtarchitektur is presented here for the first time in English translation. The propositions assembled here encourage us to reconsider mobility, concentration and the scale of architectural intervention in our own era of urban expansion. This is the second title in the GSAPP Sourcebooks series.

Anderson Richard M., Gunnell JayDee, Goodspeed Jerry L. Title : Wildflowers of the Mountain West
Author: Anderson Richard M., Gunnell JayDee, Goodspeed Jerry L.
Publisher: Utah State Univ Pr

Many recreational hikers have stopped along the trail to admire a wildflower only to wonder what, exactly, they are looking at. Wildflowers of the Mountain West is a useful field guide that makes flower identification easy for the general outdoor enthusiast.

Many available plant guides are too technical or cumbersome for non-specialists to embrace. Covering New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Nevada and Oregon, this book is perfect for the enthusiasts who has little botanical knowledge but would like to know more about the wildflowers they are seeing. Organized by flower color for easy reference, plant records include the common and scientific names, a description of typical characteristics, habitat information and distribution maps, look-alike species, color photographs, and informative commentary. In addition, the book provides a useful introduction to the Mountain West region, along with line drawings to illustrate basic flower parts, shapes, and arrangements; a glossary of common botanical terms; a quick search key; and an index.

The book is spiral-bound, making it easy to bring along while hiking, backpacking, or biking, and stunning full color photographs make visual confirmation of flower type simple and straightforward.

Peterson A. Townsend, Soberon Jorge, Pearson Richard G., Anderson Robert P., Martinez-meyer Enrique Title : Ecological Niches and Geographic Distributions
Author: Peterson A. Townsend, Soberon Jorge, Pearson Richard G., Anderson Robert P., Martinez-meyer Enrique
Publisher: Princeton Univ Pr

This book provides a first synthetic view of an emerging area of ecology and biogeography, linking individual- and population-level processes to geographic distributions and biodiversity patterns. Problems in evolutionary ecology, macroecology, and biogeography are illuminated by this integrative view. The book focuses on correlative approaches known as ecological niche modeling, species distribution modeling, or habitat suitability modeling, which use associations between known occurrences of species and environmental variables to identify environmental conditions under which populations can be maintained. The spatial distribution of environments suitable for the species can then be estimated: a potential distribution for the species. This approach has broad applicability to ecology, evolution, biogeography, and conservation biology, as well as to understanding the geographic potential of invasive species and infectious diseases, and the biological implications of climate change.

The authors lay out conceptual foundations and general principles for understanding and interpreting species distributions with respect to geography and environment. Focus is on development of niche models. While serving as a guide for students and researchers, the book also provides a theoretical framework to support future progress in the field.

Anderson William P. (EDT), Diesslin Richard L. (ILT) Title : A Journey Through Christian Theology
Author: Anderson William P. (EDT), Diesslin Richard L. (ILT)
Publisher: Fortress Pr

The history of Christian theology can be a daunting, even forbidding field of study. This people-friendly volume, a full-scale reader in the history of Christian thought, offers a non-threatening, occasionally humorous yet quite thorough entry into Christianity's central texts from the Apostolic fathers to Sallic McFague and James Cone. It is also elso enlivened by dozens of cartoons by Rich Diesslin. Highly accessible introductions to twelve major historical periods precede brief introductions to and texts from over fifty key thinkers and conciliar statements. The texts highlight perennial themes and questions in the Christian tradition, especially the meaning and importance of Jesus, challenges to the institutional church, tensions of faith and reason, spirituality, and the quest for social justice.

'A textual tour of the entire theological tradition that stops at all the must-see literary locales, as well as lesser known, but fascinating, destinations. The editor complements each text with an insightful introduction and probing study questions. This collection is an invaluable resource for any introductory course on the history of Christian thought and doctrine.' John E. Thiel Professor of Religious Studies, Fairfield University

'As a teacher of a reqired survey course---'The Christian Tradition'---I long have sought a primary-sources anthology of reasonable length (and cost) that provides excerpts from key figures and sets them in dialog with one another to model exactly the kind of cross-era conversation that must continue today. The revised edition of William Anderson's A Journey through Christian Theology looks to fit the bill nicely.' George C. Heider Professor of Theology, Valparaiso University

'Users of this anthology need not fear about losing their way on the `Journey': Anderson is a reliable guide, providing well-chosen texts, accurate introductions, penetrating study questions, and a helpful glossary.'Denis R. Janz Provost Distinguished Professor of the History of Christianity, Loyolu University New Orleans
