Gathered here, upon the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Hans-Georg Gadamer's Truth and Method, are twenty-one essays by the world's leading thinkers in contemporary hermeneutic theory. A tribute to the continuing relevance of Gadamer's thought, these essays examine the achievements of hermeneutics as well as its current status and prospects for the future.

Consequences of Hermeneutics celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of one of the most important philosophical works of the twentieth century with essay by most of the leading figurs in contemporary hermeneutic theory, including Gianni Vattimo and Jean Grondin.

Gadamer's text provides an important focus, but the amibition of these critical reappraisals extends to hermeneutics more broadly and to a range of other thinkers, such as Heidegger, Ricoeurm, Derrida, and Rorty. First collected in Italy in 1985, Art's Claim to Truth is considered by many philosophers to be one of Gianni Vattimo's most important works. Newly revised for English readers, the book begins with a challenge to Plato, Aristotle, Kant, and Hegel, who viewed art as a metaphysical aspect of reality rather than a futuristic anticipation of it. Following Martin Heidegger's interpretation of the history of philosophy, Vattimo outlines the existential ontological conditions of aesthetics, paying particular attention to the works of Kandinsky, which reaffirm the ontological implications of art.

Vattimo then builds on Hans-Georg Gadamer's theory of aesthetics and provides an alternative to a rationalistic-positivistic criticism of art. This is the heart of Vattimo's argument, and with it he demonstrates how hermeneutical philosophy reaffirms art's ontological status and makes clear the importance of hermeneutics for aesthetic studies. In the book's final section, Vattimo articulates the consequences of reclaiming the ontological status of aesthetics without its metaphysical implications, holding Aristotle's concept of beauty responsible for the dissolution of metaphysics itself. In its direct engagement with the works of Gadamer, Heidegger, and Luigi Pareyson, Art's Claim to Truth offers a better understanding of the work of Vattimo and a deeper knowledge of ontology, hermeneutics, and the philosophical examination of truth.

This book is organized in five chapters. In Chapter 1, some basic concepts are explained to completely understand the contribution of the algorithms developed in this research work. The evaluation of how motion is present and how it influences on de-interlacing is studied in Chapter 2. The design options of the proposed fuzzy motion-adaptive de-interlacing algorithm is studied in Chapter 3. A spatial interpolator that adapts the interpolation to the presence of edges in a fuzzy way is developed in Chapter 4. A temporal interpolator that adapts the strategy of the interpolation to possible repetition of areas of fields is presented in Chapter 5. Using both interpolators in the fuzzy motion-adaptive algorithm described in Chapter 3 clearly improves the de-interlaced results.

In the memoir he began in 1908, Santiago Tafolla recalls finding himself---along with his fellow Mexican Confederate soldiers---terrorized by white Confederates. When the americanos take up arms and threaten to eliminate all the 'greasers,' Tafolla is forced to desert in order to survive.

Born in Santa Fe in 1837, nine years before Mexico lost control of the region following the Mexican-American War, Tafolla chronicles his life during turbulent times. He experienced firsthand the racism prevalent to the time period and was an eyewitness to slavery. He was a veteran of the Texas Indian. Wars and the U.S. Civil War, having served as a bugler for both the northern and southern armies. And he spent the last 35 years of his life as a methodist circuit-riding preacher when most Hispanics were Catholics.

The preservation and publication of this memoir is almost as fascinating as the life described within its pages. Edited by Santiago's great-grand-daughters, Carmen Tafolla and Laura Tafolla, it includes sample pages from the original, handwritten manuscript; a transcription of the complete original Spanish memoir; an epilogue describing the significance of his later life; the English translation; and historical photos.

An exploration of the social and environmental consequences of oil extraction in the tropical rainforest. Using northern Veracruz as a case study, the author argues that oil production generated major historical and environmental transformations in land tenure systems and uses, and social organisation. Such changes, furthermore, entailed effects, including the marginalisation of indigenes, environmental destruction, and tense labour relations. In the context of the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920), however, the results of oil development did not go unchallenged. Mexican oil workers responded to their experience by forging a politicised culture and a radical left militancy that turned 'oil country' into one of the most significant sites of class conflict in revolutionary Mexico. Ultimately, the book argues, Mexican oil workers deserve their share of credit for the 1938 decree nationalising the foreign oil industry - heretofore reserved for President Lazaro Cardenas - and thus changing the course of Mexican history.

An internationally acclaimed artist whose work has been honored with inclusion in both the Venice Biennale and the Whitney Biennial, James Drake has explored political, social, and universal themes through the media of sculpture, video, installation, photography, and drawing. James Drake, the first monograph devoted to the artist, surveys thirty-five years of Drake's work up to 2007. Many of the works reproduced in James Drake reflect the artist's preoccupation with borders. Some have to do with the political border between the United States and Mexico and the inherent social and psychological tensions of people living in its extreme and unique environment. Other works explore the internal boundaries that people experience as a result of attitudes, prejudices, power, control, and arrogance. Jimmy Santiago Baca's narrative poem Huitzilopochtli, a personal response to Drake's work, provides a verbal counterpart to the artist's theme of border-crossing. Another prominent subject in Drake's work is the relationship of people and animals--in particular, the animality that always lurks in human behavior. In his essay 'Between Animality and Man,' critic Steven Henry Madoff traces this subject through Drake's work and shows how Drake uses it to contrast the forces of intellect and instinct, light and darkness. Interspersed among the color plates are quotations from writers as varied as Cormac McCarthy and Dante. Also accompanying the plates and essays is an introduction by Bruce W. Ferguson, a nationally known art curator, educator, and critic, that places Drake's work in an art historical context. Lists of James Drake's works, exhibitions, public collections, and awards, as well as a bibliography of works about Drake, complete this first retrospective of the oeuvre of this major, socially concerned artist, who always 'tries to make work as exciting, powerful, and thought-provoking as possible.'
