Falk fa parte dei tre racconti che Conrad dedicò al momento della sua vita in cui ebbe il primo comando di una nave. Coinvolto in una storia che nasconde un segreto, quello di Falk, il personaggio trasgressivo del titolo, il narratore racconta i percorsi della sua vita: le mediazioni e i comici equivoci, le illusioni e le delusioni, le convenzioni del mondo civilizzato e anche le fascinazioni mitiche. Quando il segreto sarà rivelato, si saprà che tutte le stravaganze di Falk dipendono da un lontano episodio della sua vita, quando, per sopravvivere, fu costretto a mangiare carne umana.

Marlowe racconta di aver avuto l'incarico di sostituire un capitano fluviale ucciso dagli indigeni nell'Africa centrale. Si imbarca su una nave francese e, giunto alla stazione della compagnia, vede come gli indigeni muoiano di stenti e di sfruttamento. Dopo un lungo viaggio di duecento miglia sul fiume rintrac- cia Kurtz, un leggendario agente capace di procurare più avorio di ogni altro. In realtà Kurtz, uomo solo e ormai folle, è quasi morente. Viene convinto a partire, ma muore sul battello che lo trasporta, dopo aver pronunciato un di- scorso che non può nascondere 'la tenebra del suo cuore'.

Heart of Darkness grew out of a journey Joseph Conrad took up the Congo River; the verisimilitude that the great novelist thereby brought to his most famous tale everywhere enhances its dense and shattering power.

Apparently a sailor’s yarn, it is in fact a grim parody of the adventure story, in which the narrator, Marlow, travels deep into the heart of the Congo where he encounters the crazed idealist Kurtz and discovers that the relative values of the civilized and the primitive are not what they seem. Heart of Darkness is a model of economic storytelling, an indictment of the inner and outer turmoil caused by the European imperial misadventure, and a piercing account of the fragility of the human soul.

Neglected by her bankrupt father and rejected by her governess, drifting into abstraction and despair, Flora takes refuge at sea on Captain Anthony's ship, where tragedy and her transformation begin. When published in 1913, Chance was an immediate success. Arnold Bennett wrote that 'this is a discouraging book for a writer because he damn well knows he can't write as well as this'; while an anonymous reviewer in Punch declared that 'the whole thing is much nearer wizardry than workmanship'.

A young and inexperienced sea captain finds that his first command leaves him with a ship stranded in tropical seas and a crew smitten with fever. As he wrestles with his conscience and with the increasing sense of isolation that he experiences, the captain crosses the ‘shadow-line’ between youth and adulthood. In many ways an autobiographical narrative, Conrad's novella was written at the start of the Great War when his son Borys was at the Western Front, and can be seen as an attempt to open humanity’s eyes to the qualities needed to face evil and destruction.
