Nel 1947 l'editore Mermod di Losanna propose a Colette di mandarle regolarmente un bouquet di fiori ogni volta diverso; Colette, da parte sua, avrebbe scritto una sorta di 'ritratto' dell'uno o dell'altro di quei fiori. Ne risultò una raccolta che apparve l'anno successivo con il titolo 'Per un erbario'.

'Mitsou', apparsa dapprima a puntate sui settimanale 'La Vie parisienne' alla fine del 1917, fu da Colette, per l'edizione in volume di due anni più tardi, rivista e soprattutto allungata sino all'attuale forma di 'romanzo breve'; anche se è forse eccessivo e al tempo stesso limitativo parlare di romanzo per questa 'operetta' - come in seguito l'avrebbe definita la stessa autrice che, pur nella sua brevità, assume di volta in volta le cadenze della 'pièce' teatrale e della novella epistolare.
