Jones Nicolette Title : The Plimsoll Sensation
Author: Jones Nicolette
Publisher: Trafalgar Square

In the second half of the nineteenth century, an astonishing campaign to save the lives of countless seafarers stirred a nation. Hundreds of British sailors were drowning every year as overladen and unseaworthy ships set sail, their doomed crews sacrificed while mercenary shipowners profited from the insurance.
Samuel Plimsoll, encouraged by his wife Eliza, blew the whistle on these scandalous practices. This tale of the decade of agitation that was known as the Plimsoll Sensation takes us from storm-ravaged seas to the heart of the British establishment, from courtroom conflicts to outrageous breaches of protocol in the House of Commons.
Thwarted by fellow MPs, Plimsoll caught the public imagination and became, for a while, 'the most popular man in Britain'. Crowds thronged to cheer him. Music-hall songs praised him. Novels, plays and poems were written in support of the cause. Under Plimsoll's banner working men and women stood side by side with enlightened aristocrats and industrialists, and their clamour almost toppled a prime minister.
Tireless campaigning took its tool on Plimsoll. His health suffered, his sanity was questioned, libel cases accumulated against him, and ruinous legal fees forced him to sell his home. But he persevered and in 1876 his legacy was secured: the hull of every cargo ship was marked with the level of maximum submergence - the Plimsoll line.

Soler Colette Title : What Lacan Said About Women
Author: Soler Colette
Publisher: Other Pr Llc

The definitive work on LacanâÄôs theory of the feminine.

With exquisite prose and penetrating insights, Colette Soler shares her theoretical and clinical expertise in this vibrant new text. She spins out seductive explications of Lacan's thought on the controversial question of sexual difference. With the subtlety that these topics deserve, she takes up Lacan's conception of woman and her relation to masochism, femininity and hysteria, love and death, and the impossible sexual relation. Following more than the usual suspects, What Lacan Said About Women also explores the mother's place in the unconscious, how Lacan understands depression, and why depressives feel unloved.

Soler's analysis examines the cultural implications of the texts that Lacan produced from the 1950s to the 1970s, such as the effects of science on contemporary conceptions of the feminine. She gracefully bridges the gap still left open between psychoanalysis and cultural studies. Winner of the Prix Psyche for the best work published in the fields of psychology and psychoanalysis in 2003, this book will appeal to cultural critics, especially those in gender and women's studies, as well as to anyone involved in contemporary theory or clinical practice. This study will transform novices within the field of Lacanian theory into informed thinkers and it will substantially supplement and refine the knowledge of Lacanian veterans.

Soler Colette Title : Quel che Lacan diceva delle donne. Studio di psicoanalisi
Author: Soler Colette
Publisher: Franco Angeli

Peters Colette Title : Cakes to Dream on
Author: Peters Colette
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Colette peters, the celebrated queen of the confectionary arts, unveils an inspiring resource for serious home bakers, professional chefs, and aficionados of Colette's incredible edible architecture. The ingenious cake decorator - whose miraculous and luscious concoctions have appeared everywhere from White House Christmases to royal weddings - presents a master class in cake design and decoration, alongside an all-new selection of her own cake designs. With Cakes to Dream On, Colette's inspired creations can now be rendered into show-stopping cakes of your own.

Cakes to Dream On reveals the secrets to fashioning gorgeous and utterly distinctive cakes for all occasions - whether it's an opulent marriage reception (the majestic Ivory Wedding Cake) or a fanciful children's party (the whimsical Homage to Dr. Seuss). Colette presents designs for cake architecture ranging from the imperial splendor of Dolce de Medici, to the elegant grace of Bride's Vintage Cameo, to the topsy-turvy daydream of Mad Tea Party.

Colette begins with the foundations: she illuminates step by step the process of constructing a multitiered cake, from determining serving sizes and choosing appropriate cake pans to making fillings, and ultimately stacking layers so they don't tumble off the table. Cakes to Dream On also discloses insider tricks of the trade: Colette's easy-to-follow instructions in techniques such as sugarwork, gumpaste, brush embroidery, and piping will help readers recreate the spectacular effects of this singular confectioner's toolbox.

Bakers - and their enthusiastic audiences - will discover that these sensual masterpieces tantalize the palate as much as they do the eye. Colette's cake recipes include the Coco-Loco Cake, an alluring marriage of coconut and coffee; the Meringue Buttercream and its luscious lemon, raspberry, and mocha variants; and the ambrosial caramel-tinged Heavenly White Cake.

As breathtaking as Colette's cake works appear, her clear explanations of technique are meant to stimulate readers' creative instincts and give them ideas for crafting their own distinctive confections. With more than 150 dazzling full-color photographs illustrating both processes and finished presentations, and more detailed instruction than ever before, Cakes to Dream On will inspire readers to create their own mouthwatering masterpieces. Colette's master class is truly a launchpad for cake lovers' own confectionary visions.

Jacob Colette Title : Allevare i figli oggi. Un'impresa ancora possibile?
Author: Jacob Colette
Publisher: Magi Edizioni

Colette Title : L'ingenua libertina
Author: Colette
Publisher: ES

Colette Title : Camera d'albergo
Author: Colette
Publisher: Passigli

Colette, McLeod Enid (TRN), Thurman Judith (INT) Title : Break of Day
Author: Colette, McLeod Enid (TRN), Thurman Judith (INT)
Publisher: Farrar Straus & Giroux

Colette began writing Break of Day in her early fifties, at Saint-Tropez on the Côte d'Azur, where she had bought a small house after the breakup of her second marriage. The novel's theme--the renunciation of love and the return to an independent existence supported and enriched by the beauty and peace of nature--grows out of Colette's own period of self-assessment in the middle of her life. A collection of subtle reflections about love and life, it is among her most thoughtful and stylistically bold works.

Author: Colette, Toubridge Una Vicenzo (TRN), McLeod Enid (TRN), Thurman Judith (INT), McLeod Enid
Publisher: Farrar Straus & Giroux

In My Mother's House and Sido, Colette plays fictional variations on the themes of childhood, family, and, above all, her mother. Vividly alive, fond of cities, music, theater, and books, Sido devoted herself to her village, Saint-Saveur; to her garden, with its inhabitants and its animals; and, especially, to her children, particularly her youngest, whom she called Minet-Chéri. Unlike Gigi and Chéri, which focus largely on sexual love and its repercussions, My Mother's House and Sido center on the compelling figure of a powerful, nurturing woman in late-nineteenth-century rural France, conveying the impact she had on her community and on her daughter -- who grew up to be a great writer.

Gournay Marie Le Jars De, Hillman Richard, Quesnel Colette, De Gournay Marie Le Jars Title : Apology for the Woman Writing and Other Works
Author: Gournay Marie Le Jars De, Hillman Richard, Quesnel Colette, De Gournay Marie Le Jars
Publisher: Univ of Chicago Pr

During her lifetime, the gifted writer Marie le Jars de Gournay (1565-1645) was celebrated as one of the 'seventy most famous women of all time' in Jean de la Forge's Circle of Learned Women (1663). The adopted daughter of Montaigne, as well as his editor, Gournay was a major literary force and a pioneering feminist voice during a tumultuous period in France.

This volume presents translations of four of Gournay's works that address feminist issues. Two of these appear here in English for the first time--The Promenade of Monsieur de Montaigne and The Apology for the Woman Writing. One of the first modern psychological novels, the best-selling Promenade was also the first to explore female sexual feeling. With the autobiographical Apology, Gournay defended every aspect of her life, from her moral conduct to her household management. The book also includes Gournay's last revisions (1641) of her two best-known feminist treatises, The Equality of Men and Women and The Ladies' Complaint. The editors provide a general overview of Gournay's career, as well as individual introductions and extensive annotations for each work.

Colette, White Antonia (TRN), Thurman Judith (INT) Title : The Complete Claudine
Author: Colette, White Antonia (TRN), Thurman Judith (INT)
Publisher: Farrar Straus & Giroux

Colette, prodded by her first husband, Willy, began her writing career with Claudine at School, which catapulted the young author into instant, sensational success. Among the most autobiographical of Colette's works, these four novels are dominated by the child-woman Claudine, whose strength, humor, and zest for living make her seem almost a symbol for the life force.

Janet Flanner described these books as 'amazing writing on the almost girlish search for the absolute of happiness in physical love . . . recorded by a literary brain always wide awake on the pillow.'
