'Racconti di mare e di costa' è un'opera che appartiene ormai al periodo della piena maturità artistica di Conrad. Dei tre racconti del volume, tutti ambientati nell'Oceano Indiano, 'Il coinquilino segreto' e 'Freya delle sette isole', sono sviluppi fantastici di fatti di cronaca marinaresca effettivamente avvenuti, che aveano impressionato molto Conrad. Non diversamente da altre opere anche qui rimane la prima persona e la colorita ambientazione delle cose vissute, ma con l'aggiunta di uno stile più levigato, secondo quanto ebbe a dire lo stesso Conrad a proposito del 'Coinquilino segreto' nella corrispondenza riportata alla fine del volume.

Originally published in 1902, Heart of Darkness remains one of this century’s most enduring works of fiction. Written several years after Joseph Conrad’s grueling sojourn in the Belgian Congo, the novel is a complex meditation on colonialism, evil, and the thin line between civilization and barbarity. This edition contains selections from Conrad’s Congo Diary of 1890—the first notes, in effect, for the novel, which was composed at the end of that decade. Virginia Woolf wrote of Conrad: “His books are full of moments of vision. They light up a whole character in a flash. . . . He could not write badly, one feels, to save his life.”

Set in the islands of the Malay Archipelago, Victory tells the story of a disillusioned Swede, Axel Heyst, who rescues Lena, a young English musician, from the clutches of a brutish German hotel owner. Seeking refuge at Heyst's remote island retreat on Samburan, the couple is soon besieged by three villains dispatched by the enraged hotelier. The arrival on the island paradise of this trio of fiends sets off a terrifying series of events that ultimately ends in catastrophe.
