Baker S. Josephine, Epstein Helen (INT) Title : Fighting for Life
Author: Baker S. Josephine, Epstein Helen (INT)
Publisher: New York Review of Books

New York’s lower east side was said to be the most densely populated square mile on the face of the earth in the 1890s. City health inspectors called the neighborhood “the suicide ward” and referred to one particular tenement—in an official Health Department report, no less—as an “out and out hog pen.” Diarrhea epidemics raged each summer, killing thousands of city children. Sweatshop babies with smallpox and typhus dozed in garment heaps destined for fashionable Broadway shops. Desperate mothers paced the streets to soothe their feverish children, and white mourning cloths hung from every building. A third of children living in the slums died before their fifth birthday.

By 1911, the child death rate had fallen sharply and The New York Times hailed the city as the healthiest on earth. In this witty and highly personal autobiography, public health crusader Dr. Sara Josephine Baker explains how this remarkable transformation was achieved. By the time she retired from the New York City Health Department in 1923, Baker was famous worldwide for saving the lives of 90,000 children. The public health programs Baker developed, many still in use today, have probably saved the lives of millions more. She also fought for women’s suffrage, toured Russia in the 1930s, and captured “Typhoid” Mary Malone, twice. She was also an astute observer of her times, and Fighting for Life is one of the most honest, compassionate memoirs of American medicine ever written.

Epstein Helen; Renso E. (cur.) Title : Figli dell'Olocausto. Conversazioni con i figli dei sopravvissuti
Author: Epstein Helen; Renso E. (cur.)
Publisher: Forum Edizioni

Epstein Helen Title : The Invisible Cure
Author: Epstein Helen
Publisher: Picador USA

A New York Times Notable Book of 2007

The Invisible Cure is an account of Africa's AIDS epidemic from the inside--a revelatory dispatch from the intersection of village life, government intervention, and international aid. Helen Epstein left her job in the US in 1993 to move to Uganda, where she began work on a test vaccine for HIV. Once there, she met patients, doctors, politicians, and aid workers, and began exploring the problem of AIDS in Africa through the lenses of medicine, politics, economics, and sociology. Amid the catastrophic failure to reverse the epidemic, she discovered a village-based solution that could prove more effective than any network of government intervention and international aid, an intuitive response that calls into question many of the fundamental assumptions about the AIDS in Africa.

Written with conviction, knowledge, and insight, The Invisible Cure will change how we think about the worst health crisis of the past century--and indeed about every issue of global public health.

Epstein Helen Title : Di madre in figlia. Alla ricerca della storia di mia madre
Author: Epstein Helen
Publisher: Forum Edizioni

Kovaly Heda, Epstein Franci (TRN), Epstein Helen (TRN) Title : Under a Cruel Star
Author: Kovaly Heda, Epstein Franci (TRN), Epstein Helen (TRN)
Publisher: Holmes & Meier Pub

Heda Margolius Kovaly's steady gaze at the lives caught up in Czechoslovakia's tragic fate under the Nazis and then during the Stalin era illuminates the chaotic life of a nation. Kovaly was deported to concentration camps, escaped from a death march, nearly starved in the postwar years, only to be shattered by her husband's conviction (in the infamous 1952 Slansky trial) and his execution. Resonant with lyricism, this gripping memoir is uplifting even in the midst of horror.

Epstein Helen Title : Joe Papp
Author: Epstein Helen
Publisher: Perseus Books Group

Self-made impresario, controversial producer, contentious champion of human rights and the First Amendment, founder of the New York Shakespeare Festival, and unquestionably the most dynamic force in American theater in the last quarter century, Joseph Papp (1921?1991) changed forever America's cultural landscape. He was the first to demand and to provide?against enormous odds?free Shakespeare to the public, and the first to pioneer colorblind casting and minority-group theater. He discovered and showcased at the Public Theater playwrights like David Rabe, John Guare, and Vaclav Havel; directors like Michael Bennet and James Lapine; actors like Al Pacino, Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, and Denzel Washington; and produced such classic American plays as Hair, Sticks and Bones, Streamers, The Normal Heart, and A Chorus Line, the longest running musical in Broadway history. Joe Papp offers readers a compassionate, unsparing portrait of a complex man who inspired both anger and admiration, but whose far-reaching impact on American theater remains unsurpassed.
