Trondheim parte da un'esperienza condivisa dalla maggior parte degli adulti, il sesso, costruisce il suo alfabeto fatto di buchi, di organi e di fluidi, e poi fa interagire gli elementi lasciando al lettore il divertimento di associare ogni schema a qualche scena vista o vissuta. Si tratta insomma di far lavorare la fantasia, e qualcuno magari riuscirà persino ad eccitarsi.

Assurdo e ridondante, Imbroglio sembra essere da principio soltanto la semplice caricatura di un cattivo intreccio. Ma l'ostinazione di Trondheim nell'accumulare colpi di scena, stratagemmi e meta-stratagemmi produce un risultato che va ben oltre la caricatura e finisce per creare l'illusione di un universo narrativo in qualche modo coerente, nel quale tre personaggi straordinariamente intelligenti (e contorti) si sfidano in un'escalation di trappole concepite come matrioske.

Di che cos'è precisamente la parodia questo fumetto? Non di un'opera o di un genere in particolare, quanto piuttosto di un certo universo inglese immaginario, popolato da personaggi insolitamente impassibili, ambientato in contesti eleganti tra l'Ottocento e il primo Novecento, e soprattutto caratterizzato da un sovraccarico di soluzioni narrative improbabili.
